First of all, here is the link to the FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions, for those who are computer term illiterate) on DC forum that was written by the creator, TJ dragcaveforum.technoiz...owtopic=48 This SHOULD answer all your basic questions, although I will go over some of them here in short form.
Second, please do NOT post your eggs, hatchlings, or adults on this sticky. There is a monthly thread starting June 2008 for that. Thank you!
Start-up and getting dragons
Q How do you join up to get eggs/hatchlings/dragons?
A Go to dragcave.ath.cx/ and Click on the "take one" link. YOU MUST HAVE AN EMAIL ACCOUNT THAT IS NOT HOTMAIL! Hotmail does not accept the email needed to verify your registration. If you have Hotmail, try going to www.google.com and sign up for the free email there - it will take only a few minutes, and you can forever ignore that email address after you finish your registration.
Q How do I get dragons?
A Have you signed up? No? follow the above directions. Yes? Go again to dragcave.ath.cx/, and IF there are eggs there you can click on one, it will either then say "this dragon has already been taken" or you will see the egg and 4 codes below it. Hit your back button, refresh, and click more eggs as you want them.
Q Um... I keep going to the cave enterance and there are no eggs! What gives??
A Eggs are given our regularly, but as soon as they are "stolen", they are gone until the next give out time. Each hour, there is a random number of eggs produced that never can be 1, and I doubt it's over 50 or 100... Then, the same number of eggs is divided over the rest of the hour in five minute intervals in groups of three, for example, if 12 eggs were put out at 1:00pm, then 3 eggs would be out at 1:05, 1:10, 1:15, and 1:20 but no more until the next number generated for 2pm. There are ALWAYS eggs generated for the hour, but you likely HAVE to be on AT the hour mark to get them most of the time. Good times to log on to get eggs is in the middle of the night, unfortunately for most people. On the other hand, insomniacs like myself find that great! ) The eggs used to only be on the hour, which meant more eggs then, but if you are not there ON the hour you would miss it. This way, you have a better chance - you only have to stay on 5 minutes tops to have a chance. Just keep refreshing the page - and stop as soon as you see eggs! )
SHORT ANSWER: Eggs are released at the hour mark (1:00) in a larger group, then three eggs are released every 5 minutes until that hour's egg allotment has run out. The earlier in the hour you are at the "cave enterance" the more likely you will get eggs.
Q What are these things called Clicks, Views, and Unique Views???A "Clicks" are how many people have clicked on your egg, hatchling, or dragon link and viewed that individual only, not your scroll. Unique views are what happens when someone views your dragon(s) for the first time, either on your scroll on by clicking on the egg/hatchling/dragon itself. Views happen when the dragon is viewed in any way, and is counted every single time the dragon is viewed. If your SCROLL is clicked on, it will give you unique views and views for all your dragons at once. Posting your scroll is more efficient than posting individual dragons because of this. Remember, there can only be one unique view and one click per dragon for each person or computer who looks at them, but unlimited views. YOU WANT AS MANY AS POSSIBLE OF ALL THREE, but clicks are not as needed as views and unique views.
HINT WHEN YOU POST PLACES ASK FOR PEOPLE TO CLICK YOUR SCROLL. ALL DRAGONS, EGGS, AND HATCHLINGS WILL GET VIEWED, AND IF IT'S SOMEONE NEW THERE WILL BE UNIQUE VIEWS.
NOTE - Ok, if you click on an egg, it will register a click, and maybe a view and unique view (I'm not yet totally sure - I'll try to find out). If you look at the scroll, it will register a view and a unique view if you have not viewed before. If you view again later, it will be another view. Every refresh of the page is another view. The more views the faster it will hatch as long as it's not a new egg. Don't refresh too much if there are new eggs though - too many views will kill it! If your egg shows that it is "soft" or your hatchling is "sick" YOU WANT TO HIDE IT. Check out the section about eggs to learn how to fix this problem.
Q How many clicks/views/unique views do I need to get my egg to hatch or hatchling to mature?
A Heh, no one but TJ, the creator, knows. Just get as many as you can, but make sure that the clicks are not more than the unique views or the egg will get sick and maybe die. Remember - views are your friend, but too many friends at once can be overwhelming, especially for a little egg or hatchling!
Q I want a specific dragon. How do I get it?
A Same way everyone else does - you have to look at the cave entrance when you are signed in to your scroll and click on the egg before anyone else does. Good luck - the "rare" eggs are really popular right now, and hard to get. )
All about eggs
Q It won't let me get more dragons! WHY???
A You can only have up to 4 eggs at a time. If you have bred your adult dragons, you can have up to 5 eggs.
Q WAHHHH!!!! I only have two eggs and I can't get more??? I thought you said....!!!!
A I know I said you can have 4 eggs or 5 if you bred them, BUT, you can take no more if you have four or more hatchlings. I have had 5 hatchlings once and two eggs... And I could not get more eggs until I had only 3 hatchlings. *shrugs* That's how it goes. Not my rules, but that make it so there are more eggs for other people and you don't have so many hatchlings/eggs that you cannot raise them all up!
Q MY EGG IS SICK!!!!
A If you only just stole the egg or hatchling, just click on "view" and the prople should be fixed. IF you have had it awhile, then something IS wrong. Go to your scroll, click "actions" for that egg or hatchling, and HIDE THE EGG/HATCHLING. Wait a day, then unhide.
Q MY EGG IS CRACKING!!! HOW DO I FIX IT???
A Congrats, you are about to own a hatchling instead of an egg! The egg needs to crack to get the hatchling out.
Q HELP!!! MY EGG IS ABOUT TO DIE AND HASN"T HATCHED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
A IF you have less than .2 days espcially, or if your egg has a HUGE HOLE IN IT, go to actions, and "kill" the egg. Really, do it. That releases the hatchling and you have a good chance to catch it and still have the hatchling. BUT DO NOT VIEW THE HATCHLING AFTERWARDS!!! It will often die if you do! Suggestion: maybe HIDE the hatchling in this case for a half hour or hour, since you do have seven days to get the hatchling to grow up.
Q HELP!!! I KILLED MY EGG!!!
A Sorry, can't help you there. BUT, READ THIS!!! DO NOT KILL YOUR DRAGONS UNLESS THERE ARE LESS THAN 9 DRAGONS/EGGS ON YOUR SCROLL THAT YOU'VE KILLED. Otherwise, your scroll will BURN. They will dissappear after 14 days, so you don't have to worry too much. And they only count if they are still on your scroll.
Q MY EGG DIED!!! WHY???
A Sheesh, many possibilities.
1) It didn't hatch before the 7 day time limit because of not enough clicks/views/unique views.
2) It got sick and died from too many clicks and not enough unique views. 3) It was viewed (simple views) WAY too many times in the first two days! NOTE Do not let your new egg get more than about 200 views the first day, or 400 the second. CHECK WHEN YOU CAN to make sure it isn't sick. If there are too many views, the egg will die. THat can also happen if YOU REFRESH YOUR SCROLL TOO MANY TIMES (viewing in the mode that everyone can see with your scroll, not the one with the "action" and "get codes" buttons). Other possibilities may exist.
Q There has been this HUGE hole in the egg FOREVER!!! When will it hatch!?!
A Be PATIENT. Eggs usually won't hatch until they have less than 5 days left before dying. Hatchlings won't grow up usually until less than 5 days as well.
Q I want to abandon my egg. Why can't I?
A You must have your egg for at least a few hours before it can be abandoned - I'm not sure the exact time limit, but it's around 8 I think. After that, you may abandon it. Although, if you bred the egg, you can abandon it right away if you want to.
Q I want to name my egg. Why can't I?
A You can only name hatchlings or adults. Sorry!
Hatchling and adult questions
Q I tried to name my dragon, but the "ink dissapeared", or so the message said!!!
A There are THOUSANDS of dragons out there, and many or most are named. No two dragons may have the same name. Period. Thus, just make a new name, or add a last name to it and maybe use that last name for all the dragons? Up to you, but you just have to choose a different name. Spaces, dashes, and apostraphes can be used ( " " space, "-" dash, " ' " Apostrophe).
Q I named my hatchling before, can I change the name now?
A NO. *cough* That's why I have a female red dragon named Fireboy...
Q I named my hatchlings/adults before, but the names are gone!!! WHAT HAPPENED???
A Heh, you have to have at least one view per 30 days or the names will dissappear. All you have to do is either view it yourself (not in the edit mode where you have access to the actions, but in the mode that everyone can access), or have someone else click on your scroll link somewhere. Just keep it in your signature and there should be no problem.
Q Can my adult dragon die?
A Can? yes. Will? Not unless YOU kill it... But that's another post later, titled "SPOILERS"
Q What is the Freezing button for?
A In the actions menu, you have the option to FREEZE a hatchling (ONLY hatchlings). That makes the dragon stay exactly the same, never die, and never grow up. Handy if your dragon is about to die and you want to keep it anyways...
Q What about the "kill" button?
A Heh, look in the spoilers. No need to kill anything but eggs whose time is nearly out and won't hatch if you don't kill it. Well, no NEED, except the spoilers... heh...
General questions
Q What exactly is a "sprite"?
A Sprites are the little cartoons that you see representing your dragon, egg, or hatchling. Certain people actually start drawing sprites for new dragons at times, so there will be newer dragons in the future to collect as well. It's just the pictures you see representing what you have "stolen" from the cave. )
Q What do you mean, "breed"?
A Yes, you can breed dragons. Well, most of them. Go to one of your ADULT females, enter the "action" page for that dragon, and select "breed." Then choose the male you'd like to breed her with. You have a 50% chance of getting the same egg as mom, and 50% chance as being the same as dad. NOTE Each dragon can breed ONE time per 7 days. If you breed at 8am Monday morning, those two dragons may not breed to ANY dragon until next Monday at 8am.
Q How do you get the dragon/egg/hatchling to come up in a post or in my signature???
A Heh... On your scroll, select the "get codes" page, and copy the BBC code or the BBC Tiny URL code, and paste THAT in your signature or on the post. If you use the tiny URL (bottom most code), you can fit three dragons/eggs/hatchlings in the signature plus a link to your scroll. D But if you are posting in the monthly thread and asking me to post it to the Egg Sanctuary, please use the longer BBC code (third one down of the four) so I can later copy it to the Sanctuary page.
Q Sanctuary? WHAT sanctuary? What are you talking about???
A There is a guild on Gaiaonline.com for the Dragon Cave. There, they have an egg sanctuary where people can post their eggs IF they are a member of gaia (free). You can visit the sanctuary here and PLEASE click on as many eggs/hatchlings as you can! www.gaiaonline.com/gui...t=11296853 Ok, you do NOT need to be a member of Gaia to visit or click on the eggs, but you do to be able to post more eggs. If you don't want that hassle, please post on the monthly thread your eggs or hatchlings using the BBC codes (the page is only for hatching eggs and maturing hatchlings to adults). Also, when the hatchlings become adults, they are deleted from the page since there is no need for them to be there cluttering up the hatchery/sanctuary.
Q I don't seem to be getting many clicks/views for my eggs! They are about to die! What do I do????
A Post on forums, chat rooms, and anywhere else you post online with the eggs/hatchlings in your signature or in the post. BUT, read the rules of the place you are posting to make sure the "egg spam" is legal there or you may get banned... Gaia (www.gaiaonline.com) is a PERFECT place to spread egg spam, though if you use the sanctuary from the start, you should be able to hatch them anyways. But if you need that little boost, spending some time pleading for clicks on your scroll or the particular egg will get it much closer to hatching, or hatch it even! Remember, if you need to you can KILL THE EGG BEFORE IT RUNS OUT OF TIME!!!! See question above, "HELP!!! MY EGG IS ABOUT TO DIE AND HASN"T HATCHED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
Q *Screams* The site is not working!!! What is going on????
A Many possibilities. There are thousands of people who are on this site, and there may be too many people using the server for you to be able to get on. Unlikely now, though, since a recent server switch again. OR, TJ (their creator) may be working on something where he has to close the site down for a few minutes - happened recently for 2 hours almost, and many people panicked! Or your computer is just having issues with the site, which is possible but not as likely. Right now, it most likely would be TJ working on something.
Q What are those things in some signatures with pictures of all those eggs, hatchlings, and adult dragons?
A Those are called "incubators." They are linked to your scroll, and are a fun way to advertise ALL your dragons you own within your signature, instead of the three max we can do on our signatures here on Rat Forum. On the other hand, it isn't always updated through the incubators' site, so it may not be very current unless you ask someone who works on the incubators on THAT site to update yours. You can find out more as well as request an incubator to be made for you at www.incubators.forumsvibe.com
