What are these things?

These little bugs look almost like wood splinters. They are brown, nearly microscopic, sliver-like creatures which move around slowly. The largest ones are about as thick as 2 or 3 hairs and no longer than 1/16 of an inch. Most are even shorter than that. They don't seem to jump or fly, but they definitely move around. I have observed them moving on a white bed sheet. I couldn't tell how they were moving because they were too small.

I tried to take a picture of them but they are too small to focus upon clearly. I can zoom in and doctor in Photoshop, but the color isn't really accurate. They are more of a tan color with a darker head (I think it is a head).

They seem to bite, or at least irritate the skin, when we are sleeping. They sometimes leave tiny little red marks but usually just feel irritating when we are sleeping. I have been searching for hours on the net but I haven't had any luck finding out what these things are. I was thinking springtails but springtails seem more complex than these if that makes any sense.

We had exterminated bedbugs a few months ago and have replaced carpeting, tossed out old furniture and mattresses, and kept an out for bedbugs. We seem to be bug free with the exception of these strange little bugs.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

The orange object in the picture is a tic-tac... coins reflected too much light.

Thanks, Johnny in NY.

Re: What are these things?

Johnny,

Hard to tell from the pic but at first glance I thought they resembled flea larvae. Do you have any cats or dogs which get on the bed or are in the room? This is just a guess, the pic is too blurred for a positive identification.

I will forward your message to some of my colleagues and let you know what they come up with.

Thanks,

Re: Re: What are these things?

Thanks for the reply. Flea larvae makes sense according to pics I have searched out on the net. Only problem is that we do not have any pets or mice. Only our neighbor has a dog in the next apartment over. We do share a common wall and his dog is pretty dirty looking (so is the neighbor coincidentally).

I wish I could get a better picture but these things are just too small to focus on properly.

Thanks again for your interest on our little problem. I look forward to any other input you are able to provide.

If these are flea larvae would they be difficult to exterminate? Here in enviro-friendly NY (have you been to Brooklyn? - unspoiled beauty ) a lot of pesticides are banned and professional services charge a well bitten arm and leg for their services. Is this something that I could handle myself?

Re: Re: Re: What are these things?

Johnny,

I sent you an email about taking some samples to your local Agricultural Extension office. They will be better able to help with an I.D.

You can also contact a local pest control company in your area. If you will click on the IPCO link above, you can probably find some companies in your area.

Without knowing what it is I would not want to guess as to whether or not it is something you should attempt to treat yourself.

I am interested in what the insect is if you find out. Could you please either post it here or email me?

Thanks,
