Beach to Bay 1st Leg
This post is for all the participants from the SMRC that will be running the 1st leg of the Beach to Bay. Here we can find each other and share pertinent information regarding that leg of the race. I suggest that other runners create a separate post for the other legs. Who else is running the beach leg of this race? Have you run or raced on a beach before? Do you have recommendations for those of us that are running that segment whether we are are causually or competively running the race? I believe the start of the race is 2 miles from the condos. Does anyone plan on jogging down to the start as a warmup? |

Recommendations: Once the gun goes off, run as close to the water as possible. Running on packed sand, wet sand is much easier than running on loose sand, especially when your going 4 miles on the sand. Other than figthing the sand, its a good leg to run. The weather is nice since the first leg is early (7 a.m.) Good luck all you first leggers! |

It has been years since i ran the B2B but for three years I was always the first leg - my legs were strong was the excuse they always gave - one year I ran close to the water but it curves in and out - i tried running in the water since it was close to shore - it got deeper than you would have thought - and it is covered in slime (oil). The next year I ran off to the side up on the sidewalk to the turn around point and that worked great (do not know if it was legal but i did run around the turn around point). It was a little farther distance but the pace was much faster. The next year they had rain so the sand was packed and that was the best. Trying to pass another runner in soft sand is almost impossible ( I was running in a tire track of packed sand). You step out of the tire track and felt like you stopped in your tracks in the soft sand. It's a tough leg but so are the overpass and last leg for various reasons. Running in sand is almost as hard as finding your ride after the run!! But that is another story. Moe
