Race Report - Carrabba's Half Marathon, 6/21/08
Around 6:15 Saturday morning, 6/21, Linda and I piled into Laura Mason's car and the three of us headed down to McAllister Park in San Antonio for the Carrabba's Half Marathon. Linda was doing the nature walk, and Laura and I were running the half marathon. As a general statement, running a half marathon in Texas in June does not seem to be a particularly bright thing to do. Running one that consists of four loops is even less bright. Topping it all off was the fact that both Laura and I had various gastrointestinal issues at work, so it ended up being a great day for suffering. It WAS warm and humid, but it could have been worse. The four loops were primarily on shaded trails, which made the whole thing bearable. A half marathon in the direct sun would probably have been a non-starter. It occurred to me that those shady trails in McAllister Park are probably a great place to do long training runs in the summer for fall and winter marathons. Laura and I suffered together for the first three loops, running the first couple of miles before the heat and our maladies started slowing us down. A pit stop just past halfway worked wonders for my intestinal condition, although it didn't do much for my pace. This race is mainly about the relay and the 4-person teams doing it; it's not about the individual runners. And there were some very fast and competitive relay teams; having their members blow past us on the trails reinforced the turtle-like nature of our own paces. But, I think we both viewed this race as a training run for the Rock N' Roll Marathon in November, not so much as a feat in itself. Still, doing 13 miles in the summer is an accomplishment in any case; I personally hadn't covered 13 miles at one time in five or six years, so I was kind of pleased with myself. Starting the 4th loop, I told Laura I wanted to work on pacing for the latter stages of the upcoming marathon, so I launched into a tortured 100-paces-running, 50-paces-walking thing that got me to the finish in 2:48:34. Laura followed shortly in 2:55:05. A couple of true back-of-the-packers! But who cares! We cared a little bit when we went through the line to get our food that was catered by Carrabba's. As they got to the end they began to worry about running out of food, so us back-of-the packers got less-than-generous servings. But it tasted great. All in all, no complaints. Linda enjoyed the nature walk; Laura and I enjoyed the run (once it was over) and we all enjoyed the food. This race was a good value; for $24, I ran the half and got a shirt and the meal. Linda got the nature walk, a shirt and the meal for $18. Not bad. David Alexander |
