why we do what we do..for those who led by example...“A Tribute to Charlie Perez"
In my humble opinion there is no sport that draws competitors and families closer together than the sport of wrestling. Through the trials and tribulations, the victories and defeats, the common bond of family grows ever stronger.
On April 9, 2003 one of our family members passed away. Charlie Perez epitomized everything that is great about the sport of wrestling. His knowledge of the sport, his nurturing of young wrestlers, his endearing personality are qualities we’ve all come to know and love. Qualities we are all certain to miss. Charlie Perez was an unselfish, caring, humble and forthright man. He loved life, his wife Deb and his two children, Candace and Nick, along with his friends, and the great sport of wrestling.
Charlie Perez was and will always be one greatest wrestling officials to ever grace a mat. For over 20 years, Charlie has served as a very competent, highly qualified, and dedicated wrestling official.
A 1971 Middlesex County Wrestling Champion and a graduate of Madison Township High School, he later went on to wrestle for John Sacchi at Middlesex County College and then at Wagner University where he was a team captain. He was the 1971 Middlesex County Champion at 141 pounds wrestling for Madison Township HS (now Old Bridge HS). He went undefeated during the 1972 season.
Charlie has been involved in many aspects of wrestling throughout his life. After graduating high school he was instrumental in starting the Old Bridge Mat Rats -- the recreational program that still exists today.
Charlie still contributed to recreational wrestling as the officials assignor for the Mid-Jersey Midget League. He also assigns the officials for the Old Bridge Wrestling Festival and the Central Jersey Summer Duals. In addition, several area middle schools use Charlie to assign their officials for their home matches as well. During his career as a high school wrestling official, Charlie has officiated numerous Holiday and County Tournaments, including the GMC Tournament. He has also officiated on the district level, most recently at District 19 and in the Region 5 Tournament. Charlie has done several State Sectional matches and has also worked the New Jersey Team State Finals.
Charlie has also taken an active leadership role in the New Jersey Wrestling Officials Association where he serves as the treasurer of the Central Chapter and is their Vice President Elect a role he will assume in September. Charlie works very hard at promoting the sport of wrestling.
His generosity and caring for the sport he loves is second to none. His dedication and leadership in the sport of wrestling is well recognized. Charlie wrestled at Middlesex County College, Wagner College and in the Marine Corp. He took first in the 1975 Okinawa Marine Championships at 150 pounds. He graduate HS, went to Middlesex County College for a year, joined the Marine Corp., returned from the service, and went back to Middlesex. From there he went onto Wagner College, and continued there until he got his M.B.A. He worked in Mortgage Banking. His achievements on the mat were impressive. His achievements in life were greater. He lived in Howell Township with his wife and children. He was a soccer referee, a wrestling referee and a softball umpire. In the late 70’’s Charlie created the Old Bridge Mat Rat Program. He was one of the founders of the Mid Jersey Midget Wrestling League. He coached High School wrestling as an assistant at Holmdel H.S. When the Howell Predator Wrestling Club was being formed by Rich Famularo, Charlie attended meetings with Rich, helped in approaching the Town, and lent his assistance and experience to help get the program off the ground.
He was the type of person who was always there to make sure that youth sports remained for the kids. He was always there to help out.
He was one of the most giving people I know. Charlie would volunteer his time to referee wrestle-offs for the Howell Wrestling Club. He assigned refs for our two Jersey Shore League Teams, and two Sixth Grade and under teams. He did this for us without any compensation. If we needed a ref, we would call Charlie. If he wasn’’t available he always knew someone who was. The list of things that Charlie did for youth sports goes on and on.
Many people never knew of him, or his efforts, because a lot of his contributions and activities were of a ““behind the scenes”” nature. Charlie was selected as the Greater Middlesex Conference Wrestling Coaches Association's Official of the Year, an award his family will now receive.
All of us at the Predator Wrestling Club feel a tremendous sense of loss. Over time we will ensure that the memory of Charlie Perez and the qualities that he bought to our lives will never be forgotten.
Eternal rest, grant unto him Lord, and may perpetual light .” |
