The Ipanema Plaza is right across from the gay area on Ipanema beach. The nearest sauna is Studio 64. As for being a New Yorker, do you remotely resemble a gay version of Samantha's sex dates (Sex and the City)? If yes, then you'll have a fantastic time in Rio.

GayTravelBrazil has great tips on Sauna etiquete -- particularly saunas with boys. In regular saunas one does not rent rooms (cabines). One connects and then retires to an open room. Also, generally the action occurs earlier rather than later in the day -- particularly during weekdays.
