Boycott Bazril
As much as I'd looked forward to going to Rio in 2007 during Carnival, if you think about expense (US 5,000 dollars); after security research, the danger is not worth it; either you will be attacked or someone you meet during your stay will have been.
Any where else in the world if you were told in local sites "don't wear the wrong kind of shorts and/or shirts or shoes-socks"; you would not go; the allure is great, but the simple answer is "don't' go".

Why do I sense prejudice raising its ugly head here?
I think after security research you should also find out that violence can happen just about anywhere. Not trying to justify any type of violence but at least in Rio it’s driven by poverty. What about the violence driven by hatred from terrorists attacks? Does that mean we shouldn’t be travelling to anywhere in Europe and America as those are prime targets?
Research should also tell you that boycott has never been the answer to any problems.

Re: Boycott Bazril
I have not checked up on the true security situation in Brazil, but can tell you that the situation was bad enough when I went over a good part of Rio, and south and west of Rio, hitting countryside and cities. That was way back in the '60's and '70s and nothing happened to me or my wife. You have to use the caution required of an intelligent person. Remember millions of Brazilians, just like you, manage to stay alive and happy, so take your cues from them. If told not to go on the beach at night, DON'T GO. If told not to wear expensive jewelry and watches, then Don't.
I do get angry about governments that do nothing in the face of crime (ARUBA where a boycott is doing something to the American tourist traffic, after the police would not prosecute the murderers).
Brazil tries, but still has not got it that they must get there people out of poverty or put up with crime.

Re: Boycott Bazril
I have been to brazil 2 years in a row.
The first time I got robbed by the poor. I was targeted from a supermarket where someone watched me enter my card PIN number then followed and robbed me on the street. Stole my bag & everything - emptied US$ 1000 from my account before I could cancel my card.
The second time I was robbed by the militar police. I was stopped for speeding. They searched the rental car & found canabis - nothing to do with me, probably planted there by them. They insisted they wanted to to pay them a fine or I would go to jail. Guns were waved at me & my passport held. They told me I would get it back when I paid the fine. I was taken to a cash point followed by a police car with no registration plates. They wanted B$5000 I told them my card would not allow this and gave them B$1000.
I have travelled all over the world. This is the only place I have had this level of robbery. WARNING it is very unsafe. For your own safety be very careful who you trust. I am returning soon and am wondering who will rob me this time.

Rio is a city, and in ANY city, (yes, even Disney's now NYC) you must be careful! I have seen crimes happen to tourists in my five years going and EVERY time it was because of careless actions. Yes, if you walk on Copacabana beach at night with your purse it will probably be robbed. yes, if you are not careful at an ATM machine, (anywhere in the world) you can be a victim. I go every year, dress down a little and have a blast! I also see PLENTY of tourists doing really stupid things! There really is no need to let people see how much money/jewlrey you can flash! Most of the people who live in Rio are gentle, (the nation has never had a war) and love to see people discover their city! I have been walking around with my beachbag, and had people stop me to let me know my bag is too open. If you stop at a traffic light in South Florida you could easily become a crime victim! Rio is beautiful, and be careful!
