co-ordination of emergency ham operators
Folks, I have had my ticket for only about 6 months, but in that time, I have had an opportunity to be involved with several events. During this last Katrina disaster, many of us who worked radios in East Texas have come to the conclusion that we need a common clearing house to find operators in case of emergency. As you know, Dave Pulley W5DLP, a TVARC member, has been named EC of the Van Zandt Emergency Service. In that capacity he activated our fledgling organization last Friday and Saturday at Canton. We were then asked to assist in Athens Saturday night and Sunday morning and then again in Rains County Tues, 9/8. It became evident that when every RACES/ARES organization is activated, it requires operators from not only your organization, but from others also to have enough operators to function on an on-going basis. What we need is some common list by which all hams in this part of the country can be alerted to a need and provide a number that they can call to assist in operations. There have been several suggestions, but no final solutions. Look for an update as this issue will be addressed later. Arlie |
