Re: restore original loop with not for profit organization

I think this idea has a lot of potential. Other posts have suggested that Maine form some form of cooperative or maybe even a merge with Edaville as they look for a new location. While that might be nice, the truth is that mergers, even under the best conditions, are very difficult to plan and then execute. In the case of Eda and MNG, this is even more difficult since they have two different objectives of their goals. Maine is much more of a museum to preserve the history of two foot railroading in NE. Edaville, while they value that history, has taken a strategy of developing an excellent family attraction in NE which they have done an admirable job at doing. I think both organizations appreciate what the other is doing and we would not have those trains if either of them had not existed but the cultures remain very different. However, I did a little research and found that there are other models that might succeed.
In looking at the history of other tourist railroads and how they dealt with their struggles a number of them have used an interesting association of two business units, one operationally focused and the other a not for profit, volunteer supported, museum style group. An excellent example of this can be found as close as Essex CT. with the Valley RR. This mixture would allow Eda to continue and expand as the excellent tourist and family attraction it has done so well while supporting a volunteer organization to rebuild some of the original historical treasures including a longer loop. The non-profit might be able to attract grants, organize volunteers, get involvement from local vocational schools plus avoid some of the high costs involved with paid employees and public attendance, If the non-profit was a re-located MNG that would get everything off to an amazing start. One can only hope.
