playing by ear

well

one necessary skill in accordion [most folk music] is playing by ear

very rarely do you get tablature, written music, lyrics, or helpful videos

people just play

all you really have is a recording, usually

yeah it;d be better
and not any harder to shoot from that other side
but still

very slim number of things you could learn that way

even if you could see the fingers

but

boozoo [ i think ] used to play with his hand under a cloth
right hand
if he thought any accordion players were watching him

he usually objected to being filmed at all, too

Re: playing by ear

this song befuddles me, but, I've gotten to where I play predominantly by ear at this point. I might not play exactly the way they do, but, I play something better fit to my ability usually.

Perhaps I should give this song another shot. Tried it a couple of years ago, and, no way.

Re: playing by ear

just learn his little fragments
string them together
it doesn;t seem to change chords much
easy but boring for the band
play strong, loud
keep the bass going
try to make it crooked like he plays it more or less
use his irregular words
don;t play it straight A and B like a regular song

Re: playing by ear

Guys don't forget Michael Doucet's version of this song on his Beausolo album. He does a pretty bang up job I thought. He calls it Bee's Blues. Kinda sounds a little like Flammes d'enfer. I love this song. His playing reminds me a lot of Bois Sec, or Moise Robin

Bee Fontenot's pain de mais

good information christian, I'll try to get and heard the beausoleil's version.

Re: playing by ear

More like pre-Beausoleil. Kinda like Coteau or something seventies. Lawrence Ardoin used to run the cut with this.
