Re: Holidays

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone! i'm about to start making my boudin dressin and injecting my turkey so its ready for the peanut oil in the morning!

what does it mean for cajuns?

Does Thanksgivingday mean something special for the cajuns? I was just wondering.
I once read that it was a party after somebody killed some unarmed indians?

I don't want to start a political discussion, but in Europe we don't have this holiday.

Re: what does it mean for cajuns?

yea thats what it is about.....we suckered these indians into coming to our cochon de lait(pig roast)...they came and brought lots of food..after will killed them all and stole their food...we had a fais-do-do and ate the food...but they got us back...now they steal all our money at the grand cashatta casino!!! **** indians!!

Re: what does it mean for cajuns?

Thanksgiving is an American holiday not celebrated in
Cajun country until Americanization. Cajuns didnt put up much of a fight against having another reason to have a big get-together with lots of food.

We did Cajunize it though, in my family we had panse bourée (chaudin in some areas-stuffed pig stomach), farre (rice dressing or dirty rice), and gumbo.

Thanks, Bryan
very interesting.

pig stomach

I ate it once in Brittany in France. Is it French from origin or is it just because you can eat it?

Re: pig stomach

I really dont know, could very well be something brought from France. But just as likely that we eat it because in the good old days they didnt waste anything edible and it was good enough to keep around. I bet it was eaten in a lot of places that dont eat it now. People seem to quit eating some things as cultures change, even in Louisiana.
