For Nicole - Melodie

Hi Nicole - i was wondering what kind of reeds were fitted in your Melodie - i just bought an old cajun box with brass reed plates & steel reeds - sounds very old fashioned, ringy and sweet & softer compared to Bincis; a bit like the Segura Brothers' "New Iberia Polka" , AND a D melodie accordion i played about a year ago - nout

For Nout -- LONG-scale Bincis

Hi Nout,
I've discussed reeds on several occasions with Sylvain, who builds the Mélodies with Raynald Ouellet. He specifies a longer-scale reed from Binci (and also uses Salpas sometimes). For a given tone, there are three possible reed lengths -- longer reeds give quicker response but are not as loud. There are other subtle differences, too. Of course the Mélodie's reedblocks are different than most other one-row accordions as well, so that might also account for the special sound that you heard.
Cheers,
Andy
