Huapango on a 7 button single row

Off topic as usual.. interesting to see a well-known Tex Mex accordionist wally gonzales playing a hupango ( in 6/8 time ) on a single row 7 button box.

Re: Huapango on a 7 button single row

Wow, he makes that toy sound good! I want whatever he's got

Re: Re: Huapango on a 7 button single row

Yes, he's doing a nice job

Y'know, I've got one of those "toy" boxes, but the
bellows isn't anywhere near as long as his!

I wonder if he glued two bellows together or made
some sort of alteration?

Playing one of those toy boxes is an excellent
exercise that demonstrates just what is so good about a
"real" LA made instrument

Re: Re: Re: Huapango on a 7 button single row

It looks like he did put two bellows together to me.

Also, I think he changed out the top reed to allow for the accidental.

Re: Huapango on a 7 button single row

I was channel surfing last night and stumbled onto the national spelling bee championship. One of the last kids was eliminated on the word "huapango"! She spelled it "wapango", which is how the judge pronounced it.

Re: Re: Huapango on a 7 button single row

Yep.. it isn't her fault

a. Huapango is not a Spanish loan-word in wide circulation in English, and therefore should not ( IMHO ) be included. This may be the Spanish pronunciation of an indigenous language to Mexico or elsewhere. Dunno.

b. The at the beginning of words in Spanish in careful pronunciation have a barely audible glottal fricative, like when clearing your throat( aspiration which may suggest an spelling). When not "fricatized" it sounds like a normal lip-rounded . The Bee's official pronounced it like a , which most English speakers would do, however, she is being asked to spell the anglicized casual pronunciation of a foreign word.. which has more than one pronunciation and how pronounced would influence your perception of the spelling.

I love this stuff, it reminds me that it is not the instrument. :)
