Finger Placement

I'm an old guy (57), I started trying to play the accordion about 3 months ago. I thought I was progressing pretty good, then I read on this blog and from Chris Miller's video that your fingers should be glued to the keys at all times. About 2 weeks ago I started trying to do this. As a result I have gone backwards and have been unable to make much progress. I have to concentrate really hard to keep my fingers on the keys and as I play octives my other fingers push down keys that I don't intend to push. Is it that important to do this, or, am I being too impatient? Also, can anyone give me any advice on how to practice with the bass side.
