I use Monster Performer 500 XLR mic cables, connected to Shure SM-58 mics. Works OK for me.

try putting the mic on the clip first, then connecting the cable.

I do do that, but it's just this huge lump trying to fit into the holder.

maybe you have the wrong mic holders

don;t really get it

most mic stands hold the mic in the center roughly

the connector is usually clear of the mic holder

maybe you have the wrong mic holders, if it won;t hold the mic in the center
