Fiddle question - Valse a Balfa

There is a slide, down from A to E, in the melody.

Trying to do this on the E string is highly uncomfortable when getting near the nut with my ring finger.

I'm wondering if:

1) this is done on the A string instead, or
2) the index finger is used to do the slide on the E string.
3) sumpin else.
