Re: Whiskey Drinking Man - What box is Roy Carrier playing?

Is there a recording of this somewhere? I am not familiar with that song.

Re: Whiskey Drinking Man - What box is Roy Carrier playing?

It's off his Cd, Whiskey Drinking Man.

I'll send you a link. I think I have it online.

Re: Whiskey Drinking Man - What box is Roy Carrier playing?

It seems pretty clear to me that Roy used an F/Bb/Eb triple row for this song. It is in the key of F, and played on the middle and inner rows.

BTW, this song is a good illustration of using the flat 3rd note.

you don;t mention what key you are trying to actually play it in..

99% of zydeco is played on the pull, 2nd position

if you can;t work it out that way, it is probably a different keyed box

to play in the key of Bb, that would call for the Eb row

you don;t mention what key you are trying to actually play it in..

if you are doing it on the C and F rows, the 'zydeco key' would be G
[[most likely only using the flat 3rd from the F row]]

Re: you don;t mention what key you are trying to actually play it in..

I was trying to play it in the exact key that Carrier was, but, seems I was off. After I got my piano keyboard, I realized I was misinterpreting the Transcribe spectrum view. Instead of the tallest note curve shown on there, I should have been looking at the tallest pointed curve.

When I play it, people say I'm playing in Bb. I play on the C/F rows.

The video I put up on it shows how I play it. Check link #2

Re: you don;t mention what key you are trying to actually play it in..

yeah ok i don;t know key either right now
i see it is the roland so all bets are off :)

but
i would not cross rows except to get the flat 3
you are crossing to get the IV chord on the pull
i;d just stay on the same row and push it instead

roy probably did cross at a lot of odd times, but that was because he didn;t have the regular number of fingers on the right hand

Re: you don;t mention what key you are trying to actually play it in..

i was playing gcf on that video, since I thought that was what he was playing. And I just forced it to work on the GCF, for the most part.

There's a blues song he does "I'm the one you want", I think, and I was playing up in that same section, and I'm guessing I need to switch box format.

Gotta cross the rows a lot for this one.

When played on an F/Bb/Eb triple row, it is in the key of F, played in the 2nd position on the 2nd row. Think of that as the "home" position. But, there's a whole lot of going across the rows happening here.

I posted a video on YouTube showing how I think this song is done. See Link# 1.

This is a good, simple song that illustrates several important things about playing Zydeco on a triple row. It has the flat 3rd. It has the F may triad played on the pull, with the root note, F, grabbed from the inner row. Other things too, which I try to point out on the video.
