Early Cajun Music: "Sundown Playboys Special" - Lionel Cormier

Cajun accordionist Lionel Cormier was one of the founding members of the Sundown Playboys in 1947. Originally called the Elton Playboys after the Louisiana town where Cormier and his family lived at the time, the group recorded for the first time in 1952. The result was a 78 rpm that featured "Sundown Playboys Special" for J.D. Miller's Feature Records (#1037). Cormier and his bandmates, including Percy Fuselier and Emory LaPoint, went on to record a number of other songs. The song is an instrumental two-step, named after the band.

I've really enjoyed the blog, Wade!

You might check your info on the Saturday Night Special. Pat Savant was the accordionist for that song and if I'm not mistaken, it was his idea to get Apple records to record it!

Thanks for the correction.

Re: Early Cajun Music: "Sundown Playboys Special" - Lionel Cormier

Unusually Pat Savant has an affection for all things British, even going as far to write tunes after places over here and I believe he has a degree in British studies! A friend of mine is a big fan and told me all this.
Another cajun hit to be released over here was Johnnie Allan's Promised Land, in the early 80's I think.
About time we had another cajun invasion, though I'm not sure the record industry counts for anything anymore since the dawning of this itunes era , I'm not sure if the charts even exist anymore or maybe I'm starting to get old!
