Metallic fill on faceplate engravings - how dat done?

anybody know the steps before and after getting the metallic point into the engraved lines on the faceplates?

Is it engraved, swiped over with metallic paint, the sanded down do remove any overwash?

Is it covered with the clear coat, then engraved, then swiped with paint, and the paint won't stick to the coating?

Or what?

Not sure what others do, but I finish my plate, and make sure all the pores are filled flush, have it engraved, then add the fill, let it dry, then put a couple top coats of finish.
