A friend loaned me his Hohner Corona III N, Xtreme so I could check it out and possibly buy it from him.
I don't know very much about this model of Hohner.
I've played around with it some, and it seems like a pretty nice little accordion.
On the back it says it was made in Germany. Year of manufacture is unknown.
3 reed (LMM), 5 switches, key of GCF. Black. Includes very nice soft case and good straps.
Since it is 3 reed, the size and weight is less than my 4 reed Italian triple rows. Which could be a minor advantage.
Appears to have been only very lightly used - in outward appearance in very good condition.
A very preliminary opinion on tuning is that it is much drier than other European factory tuned accordions I have played. Which is good. I don't like them when they are on the wet side.
The keyboard is interesting. It is grooved on the outer edge, which I like. The buttons are a little different than what I am used to. They are somewhat smaller, with slightly more rounded tops. The buttons are set a bit closer together than what I am used to, but not bad. I kinda like the keyboard, but it would take a little getting used to, but that tends to be true with any new accordion.
Oh, and it is a 34 button keyboard, with an extra button on the high end of the scale on each row. This is different from other Hohners, and more like the Italian accordions. I definitely prefer the 34 button configuration to the normal Hohner 31 button configuration. I do use those extra notes, and would miss them if they weren't there.
I looked around on the web and it seems that Hohner introduced this line of German made accordions around 2008/2009, and that they were retailing for a little below $2000. Apparently, they have been discontinued.
I don't normally use a GCF triple row. I prefer FBbEf. But, it might be nice to have it around. I have also learned to be opportunistic when a chance like this comes along. The accordion market has gone downhill badly. Prices are up, quality is down. I am not at all interested in any Chinese made accordion.
So, I might go ahead and get it. I am not sure what a good price would be. Thoughts?
Back when they were introduced Hohner (Gilbert Reyes) sent me two to check out and give him a review. , one a black the other Red.
I found them to be the best 3 row Hohners I had played up to that point.
I liked everything about them except the price.. and they have gone
up from there then discontinued and replaced with an Italian machine
at double the price.
My choice would be the GCF in black and not sure of the current market but I would think $1400 to $1800 for one in excellent condition.
See if you can get on the Reyes accordion forum and go to buy sell to see what they are going for.
I'd own one at the right price.. the bonus being 34 button, thumb groove, drier tuning, German made.. waaaaaaay above the Corona in quality.
I've had one in black (FBbEb) for over a year now (please read my recent reply to an old post on the same subject for full details) & I just LOVE it ! Paid $3K for it in 2016 brand new (they were going for around $3495 or so) & worth every penny. My Opinion: BUY ! You won't be sorry, especially for the condition it's in & for the lesser price they want than what I paid for mine. Hope this helps David.
My friend in Toronto bought one from Acordionorama.. (worst place to buy and accordion IMNSHO) his new price with Hohner Gig Bag was 2300 US. NEW>
Now they are $3400 ??
I went to Reyes Accordions to the used instrument section to check the history of sales but ran out of time.
Not sure but for a while they were going for $1600-18 USED.. NOT SURE NOW GIVEN hOHNER IS SELLING THE ancleta WHICH THEY DO NOT MAKE FOR AROUND $5k.. ABSURD..
i'LL CHECK AROUND AND SEE WHAt I find.. check melnet and see if anyone has one.
