That's what happens when you live a sheltered life

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: bravenet mystery//"Zy****"?"

Yes, but in my later life, I look forward to living in a shelter.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: bravenet mystery//"Zy****"?"

Sure you got that right? Shelter or OLD FARTS home? The later is why I now live in Florida. Nearest OLD FOLKS home is just across the ball fields. Like some towns that have a bar on every corner, we have old an folks homes on just about every corner.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: bravenet mystery//"Zy****"?"

Hush, you'll scare the children.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: bravenet mystery//"Zy****"?"

That is a slur to the Puerto Ricans. Just be glad that my X is not near you. She was a real hellfire whenever someone made the mistake of saying that or even something like ***** without the space between day and go. Her temper was hotter than her blood.

Re: Re: Ebay "cajun" box

I got one of those on ebay, for like 25 bucks (with the 2 stops) and it works somewhat and is fun to have around... but sure doesn't hold much air or sound like much either.

"The last one went for $100 and it was broken

i emailed the guy, saying i thought it was
worth about $10, and he said

"The last one went for $100 and it was broken badly.."

[he doesn;t mention if the buyer
was disappointed...]

"This is Museum quality..."

[yeah, as in unplayable..]

"I've already got an offer double that..But,I figured I'd give everyone a chance to learn....at least.."

---

oh well..

i have it on my list of bids i am watching in ebay.

i'm ready to "learn".

Re: "The last one went for $100 and it was broken

...and that is the wet dream of the ebayer.

It happens--- people pay $500 for a record worth 50¢, or buy someones old socks for $25.00, or buy a xerox copy of a photograph for hundreds...

for some it is just plain weirdness, others are sucked in and mislead.

the moral is caveat emptor!

Re: Re: "The last one went for $100 and it was broken

it ends at 2:50 pm eastern time, we;ll see

Re:Ebay "cajun" box -- "Questionable"

__. Lots to call "shenanigans" on this one. The standard is that any accordion that says "Made in Germany" is after 1918 (the place that we call Germany was a federation prior to the end of WWI and pretty much every genuine pre-1918 box is marked "Made in Saxony" or "Made in Silesia" etc.) So that seems to rule out the 1889 date.

__. Not that that makes much difference, it's just another old, worn-out box that's not really worth much.

__. I once saw an old one-row at a flea market. It had all the flappers and buttons broken off - they were entirely missing. You could hear the loose reeds shaking inside the box. All the stops were broken off. It was dirty and the bellows was in tatters. I mean, it was a total wreck - not even good for parts. When you pulled it in and out, air just swept through the open reed holes with no reeds behind them. But if you pulled really hard, it seemed that at least one reed was still in place because you could hear an asthmatic reed wheeze, kinda behind the "whoosh" noise of the air doing nothing. When I finally got that one reed to speak, the seller looked over at me and said "see, it plays".
Um, thanks but no thanks.

Re: Ebay "cajun" box

Hey--- that case alone is worth the $300.

Re: Re: Ebay "cajun" box

it's remarkably well preserved too..

final number of bids - zero

chewed off by rats.

oh well
i guess it;s no big news
shouldn;t make a big deal out of it
ebay is full of worthless accordions whose sellers
know nothing or even less
this was just an outrageous example
SO many things wrong with what the seller claimed
yet another example:
those accordions, even though a decal may
brag about some prize the manufacturer may have won,
usually in australia or new zealand,
and it may state a year the prize was won,
are of course not necessarily made in that year

the other irony is that the sellers bend over
backwards to state how old it is,
not even realizing that
age does nothing to improve an accordion.

they never know what key it;s in

florid descriptions of paint, varnish,
etc and lack of visible
rust, nothing about the sound other than that
it seems to make some.

i love how the bass strap on this one had
been chewed off by rats.

and how the stops 'seem to change the key or something
but i didn;t fool with them a lot'.

wle.

Re: chewed off by rats.

"and how the stops 'seem to change the key or something
but i didn;t fool with them a lot'."

This is standard advice to all contemporary cajun accordionists. Not sure why you think this is odd.

Re: Ebay "cajun" box

the rule of thumb for accordions on EBAY is that unless it was made by one of the master accordion makers from Louisiana, it is pretty much junk. Note how all the boxes on Ebay or Cajun Or Zydeco.
