I visited with Luderin Darbonne about two weeks ago at a Beausoleil concert sponsored by the university. Michael Doucet shared stories with the audience about how their first paid gig as a band took place in Hackberry thirty years ago. They played for two hours as an opening act for Nathan Abshire. The concert was to commemorate a return to the beginning. He told about driving from Scott about once a month to learn songs from Luderin. He then played the Hackberry Hop and apologized to Luderin for butchering his song.
The next day, the local news did a story on Luderin. His home suffered significant damage from the hurricane. He paid a $2000 deposit to a contractor to repair his home, and the contractor skipped out on him. It was a really sad story.
