Very well said,you better appreciate them while you have them.I know one Dad, that would love to hear his son play him a tune on Fathers' day.Thats not asking for much-just a few memories.But Happy Fathers Day to all who believe in family.

Amen to everything said above...my father was born in
1909 in Kentucky and played anything with strings - fiddle,
guitar, banjo, etc. Growing up, he tried to get me to
play guitar with him, but I thought that "hillbilly music" was
"square" - it wasn't until after I left home and got
into bluegrass that I appreciated his talent and the
old timey tunes he loved to play. After I got out of
the service, I came home with the idea of actually sitting
down and playing music with him. During my five year
absence, his arthritis got so bad he couldn't play the guitar.
To this day, its one of the biggest regrets
I have ever had...not being able to play with my father.

If you can not be with your Fathers in person, there is always the phone. If you are a musician, tell him to sit back with the receiver up to his ear and play him a tune. As Justin Wilson used to say, "I Guarantee", it Will bring a smile to his face and maybe even moisture to his eyes.

I can second that. I live in Upstate New York, and my dad retired to Ft. Worth, Texas. A month before he died and only 2.5 years into my attempts at accordion playing I visited him in Ft. Worth and passionately hollered some badly-pronounced Cajun French over some roughly-played Ariette noise. But something about the critical work-a-holic retired Colonel dad softened up in that moment and he said "I think I understand this thing with you and music now".

So yes...share what's precious to you with the ones you love, even if it's not an easy relationship!

yes, play music for your mom and dad!! my mom passed this year after a long spiral down with alzheimer's disease. for the last 2 months of her life, my dad said that every morning she would ask to have our cd played while she sat on the porch and stared off into space.
at her memorial service, my partner and i played sad Cajun waltzes. i know that is how she would want to be honored, friends and family gathered around along with the music that touched her.
something about this music captures the intensity and depth of human emotion.
