external mic on ebay - Questions (?)

http://cgi.ebay.com/PICK-UP-THAT-MOUNTS-ON-ACCORDION-CONCERTINA-CAJUN-BOX_W0QQitemZ260000854261QQihZ016QQcategoryZ16218QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Hi Gang... got to looking on ebay and run up on this external stick on mic. thing Any thoughts or comments?

I have a shure external mic (snap on that fits all my accordions), that I have used a time or two (rarely do I ever amplify (I am one of those sitter downer accoustical goofs). I have also used the small condensor mic's that clips on (belonging to others, which I liked real well). I believe these are pre-amped before it goes into the system (9 volt?).

I am not real smart when it comes to the amplification on the 10 buttons, though I have amps that rock that sit in the music room. Just courious about that ebay mic thing from someone else's perspective.

Oh on the subject of accordion:
I am finally back to playing after screwing up my forearm muscles and elbow last November (did a number on it)... Taking it slow, as the elbow still screams a bit after a hard days work... but I am back to playing never-the-less.. life's good!

About that mic thing ... any ideas or thoughts?

lord-god-a-mercy....
what the heck happened to that post I sent.
That thing streched out like a night crawler avoiding a hook! Oh well.

Re: external mic on ebay - Questions (?)

Hey, Nonc!
I've been curious about those mics, myself. It seems to me that by design, they strictly rely on the vibration of the box itself for sound input. I may be wrong. If this is true, it would be like using an "under the saddle" pickup on a guitar instead of an actual microphone. Not a very accurate sound reproduction. Let me know if you get you hands on one of these, or know someone who does.

Ganey

so it;s not for accordion

i think you are right, it does look
like a contact pickup, not really
a mic

even if it was a mic the element points
away from the sound

not sure why the seller thinks
it;s an accordion mic

looks more like a guitar thing to me

seller is a violin store
that should tell you something..
probably for a violin

oh
he also has an ebay store
store lists the same pickup for
cello, violin, viola, etc

so it;s not for accordion
really

Check this guy out.

This is a micophone that you can mount inside. No holes in the box if you don't want them. Get him to show you the system. It isn't a lot of money. I am going to try one. Jerry

be sure it;s a microphone,

be sure it;s a microphone, and not some
goofy piezoelectric or magnetic pickup.

[actually i would like to hear someone
report on what a piezo pickup does. i would
expect lots of clanging and flapping noises
to be carried to it through the wood, and
not very much actual reed sound..]

the location of a mic inside the accordion is
critical

if it;s a lot closer to some reeds than others,
those notes will be a lot louder

you need to back off from the reeds so that
the relative distance from the mic to each
reed is close to the same

if you try doing that in a 3 row, you find out
you can;t get one mic far enough away, because
when you close the accordion, the right and
left hand reed blocks are too close together.

so you need more than one mic inside.
