Question about mic for recording (ribbon mics especially)

Hello,

Does anyone have any experience using ribbon mics in recording the accordion?

Or ideas about what kinds of mics have been used in some of the older Cajun recordings?

Any thoughts appreciated!

Thanks,

Blair

Re: Question about mic for recording (ribbon mics especially)

Blair - I don't have much recording experience; I do much more live sound work. Nevertheless, I would expect that a ribbon mic would transparently pick up everything in the neighborhood of the mic.

Therefore, room acoustics (size, wood walls, carpet, sheetrock, etc.) and mic placement will have a good deal of impact on the recorded sound of the instrument. Also, a lot of tube-powered equipment was used in the old days. If you can borrow a high-quality tube pre-amp for your mic, you might be able to get some of the character of the old equipment.

Looks like Dirk Powell has been seriously chasing the same concept of vintage sound: www.dirkpowell.com/cypresshouse.html
