Big Nick and Harlan Johnson (of Grouyan Gumbo) have great writeups on their Cajun bands in the new issue of Dirty Linen. The author, Dan Willging, highlights a number of albums by Cajun bands outside of Louisiana.
Naturally, the reviews are good -- I wouldn't note them otherwise -- and definitely worth checking out.
Big Nick, your band's photo is front and center. And the author singles you out as being (most likely) the first ever to post squeezebox lessons online. Congrats!
Other reviews include Connecticut's River City Slim & the Zydeco Hogs, two bands from California, and even my own band, the Doc Marshalls.
Obviously, the outside-of-Louisiana Cajun/Zydeco scene is small. Nonetheless, it's great that a national publication has taken the time to give it some serious coverage.
Just picked up that issue Saturday: (well deserved) good words for the Doc Marshalls too!
The previous issue has a very interesting article on Dennis Stroughmat, a guy who learned fiddle tunes from now-departed older players in the Upper-Midwest French communities, and went on to learn Louisiana French and Quebec music.
Dirty Linen is always an interesting read, even if it creates insatiable CD lust!
