Re: Kbon 101

You've got to be kidding! They charge for listening to their radio station? I had not heard about that. I totally agree with Bryan. If they actually played a significant amount of Cajun music, I might be willing to pay to listen to them, but they really play a lot of music that I just do not care for.

Now KRVS is a different story...and I do contribute to them. Pete Bergeron's radio program is on every Monday through Friday between 6:00 and 8:00 am EST.I know that doesn't help people who live in the Central Time Zone, but that is a good radio program! All good Cajun music - a wonderful way to start the day!

Re: Re: Kbon 101

Radio stations have to pay royalties for streaming over the web in addition to the royalties they pay for over-the-air broadcasts. The method of computing royalties is complex, and I don’t pretend to understand it (see http://data.memberclicks.com/site/mbaweb/Internet_Radio_Handout_5-1.pdf for one summary I found online), but it’s based on the number of listeners and how long they listen. The rate is higher than for over-the-air listeners. KBON was losing a lot of money with unlimited free streaming, so Paul Marx decided to try upgrading the quality of the stream for a monthly fee. Nonprofit stations like KRVS pay a lower rate, and there’s also a royalty arrangement through the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, though I have no idea how KRVS handles this matter. So, I think that the KBON fee structure is certainly justified, which, of course, doesn’t mean Internet listeners will decide to pay to listen.

I think that both KBON and KRVS play vital roles in the preservation and promotion of Cajun and Creole music in Acadiana. A station playing 100 percent French music could not survive very long today here. For that matter, many people did not believe that Paul Marx was going to make a go of it with a mixed format of Cajun, Creole, Zydeco, swamp pop, country, some R&B, and a heavy emphasis on Louisiana music. Amazingly, KBON, located in the small town of Eunice, was recently the third-rated station in the Lafayette market, with a music mix that draws from the entire recorded history of Louisiana French music combined with the rest of the mix, so that listeners who tune in more for George Jones or Hank Williams Jr. get exposed to the full gamut of Louisiana French music, from Amédé Ardoin up to the present. KBON also very actively promotes Louisiana musicians and entertainment venues. And KBON does have all-French programming 5-6 a.m. weekdays and on Saturday and Sunday mornings, plus other special shows, including the unique listening experience of Thursday evening’s “Swamp and Roll Show.”

My car radio presets are on KBON and KRVS. Those outside the area can reach their own decision as to whether KBON is worth listening to for a fee, but, for just about anyone who likes French music in Acadiana, KBON is essential.

Now THIS Really IS ~ YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING!!!

Good grief people! You mean you REALLY are THAT SQUEEKY CHEAP that you are unwilling to pay $60 per year to listen to such a wonderful and unique station??? $60.00 divided by 365 days in a year works out to a whopping $0.16 cents a day. In this day and age, I don't even know WHAT you can buy for $0.16!

If you want to listen to ALL Cajun music, it's broadcast on KBON Monday through Friday 5am to 6am Central. Owner Paul Marx does an all Cajun show in French on Sunday mornings from 7 to 12 Central time, and Tee's show on Saturday mornings from 7 to 12 is almost 100% Cajun music. At $0.16 a day, that would work out to $1.12 per week or $0.07 per hour if you ONLY listen to these programs.

Mike and I bought a new car a few days ago (a 2007 SRT8 Dodge Charger ) that came equipped with Sirius "free" for a year. While it's better than the local "cookie cutter" Clear Station programming that have play lists of about 50 songs, I STILL find it BORING.

IF KBON was to be broadcast on Sirius, I'd HAPPILY pay their $12.95 a month JUST to be able to tune in KBON in the car! As it stands right now, it's sort of doubtful that we will re-up Sirius after our year is up.

Mark my words, FREE to air radio is gradually on its way out, and somewhere down the road, you're going to have to pay somebody somewhere to tune in, be it at home, at work, or in your car.

Re: Now THIS Really IS ~ YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING!!!

Well it's not just the $60 (though I am somewhat squeaky according to my kids). And I understand completely them needing to charge for the streaming. But I personally am only interested in the cajun music and cajun language, which is in time slots that I am probably not going to be at the computer, so it just isnt worth it for me. I have considered doing it just to support them, because as was said before, they are promoting something I hold dear. Now if I could get them in my vehicle, I'd be willing to pay more than that. I bet it will be here before too awful long.

Re: Re: Now THIS Really IS ~ YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING!!!

I don't see KBON coming to satellite radio b/c of the commercials. Not to mention that the SWamp and Roll show would suck w/out hearing "cut free, cut free" from Todd. I like being able to hear the local commercials on KBON and I think it just would not work. If I had high speed internet here in the country, I would jump on the chance to get KBON over the net. My house is about 10 feet from being out of KBON's broadcast range (that'll **** ya off), so I can't really catch it all the time clearly.

Re: Now THIS Really IS ~ YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING!!!

before the new year it was posted on the website that it would be $60 a QUARTER..not a year, they obviously WOKE UP and quit dreaming....$60 is a year is a bit more reasonable...and no i'm not cheap..i have sent donations to KBON many times over the years...

Re: Re: Now THIS Really IS ~ YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING!!!

We NEVER EVER EVER EVER asked for $60.00 per quarter!! NEVER!!!!

Re: Now THIS Really IS ~ YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING!!!

Us Aussies recently joined up.. we're 16.5 hours ahead of Louisiana time but even with that difference, and the frustration at times of us being asleep in the wee small hours while a favourite segment is being streamed, it's still worth the money.

As you can appreciate,we're just a little outa local KBON radio range !!!

One day we'll get streaming of KBON to car radios .....now that'd be THE best!!

KBON remains to us here an inspiration to listen to for all genres of music...and it gives us a real taste of our second home , Eunice, and all our friends there, when we hear Paul, Phil, Todd and all.....even the ad breaks we enjoy!!

Go KBON..there's no such thing as a free lunch....everything costs..and even with an Aussie Dollar/US Dollar unfavorable exchange rate we still think it's worth it.
Hey..I'll just cut back ONE Coopers Sparkling Ale a week and I'll have paid for the Subscription by the middle of the the year.

Darryl, Australia.

No stream....... Nope, me kid you no.

Sure as the world ... could'nt get connected and stream.

Ya gotta figure that KBON is not a huge conglomerate sister station with all kind'a funds to dilly dally around with.

$60 bucks? It's not a lot on the up front just thinking about it... but I am sure that buys a gob of rice somewhere for someone that needs it in a depressed situation... then again, if they have a halfway descent computer and a HSI connection going on, well now looky here...60 clams a yr. is not much, considering matters.

Ways To Save:

1. Ya may have to catch ya a croaker and use it as cut bait.
2. Don't throw away the mullet gizzards (send em to Nonc D... penny a giz for freash).

Any other ideas to save for the $60 bucks???

Re: No stream....... Nope, me kid you no.

Well, I guess I could stop buying so many cajun cd's.

Re: Re: Now THIS Really IS ~ YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING!!!

If the times are bad for the show you like....you
can always use software to capture the stream. I
use Audio Hijack on my mac to capture the stream to
an mp3 that I can put on my ipod and listen to any time
I want. I do that every week for the Liberty Theatre
show. I don't have to be around..as long as my computer is on...I can use the application to automatically launch the stream and capture it. Might make it more worthwhile for some of you. Mark

Re: Re: Re: Now THIS Really IS ~ YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING!!!

hmmmm thanks for that info Mark...kinda like TIVO for the computer

Re: Re: Re: Re: Now THIS Really IS ~ YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING!!!

ah dang..only for Mac users..

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Now THIS Really IS ~ YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING!!!

Hey Chad:

Here is one for the pc. I've never tried it...I use a mac at
home...but the features look similar to audio hijack.

Re: Re: Kbon 101

In my opinion, and that of so many local recording artists, KBON has done more for our local Louisiana artists and music, including Cajun, Zydeco & Swamp Pop in the short ten years we have been on the air than all the other radio stations put together. While the other stations treat our local artist's music like secondary music, putting it ONLY in early morning hours or weekends, KBON has been able to present it as music that belongs with the national music. We present it as EQUAL!!!

Do you realize that over 85% of our overall music programming is LOUISIANA ARTISTS! We here at KBON support our local musicians, wheather they are Cajun, Zydeco, Swamp Pop, Blues, Country, etc. They are our people in music.

"LOUISIANA. It's more than just "a state". It's a way of life"!!!

* Thursday Jan. 25th, 2007 KBON was the recipient of OffBeat's "Best of The Beat" award for "BEST RADIO STATION".

Re: Kbon 101

You can get it in your car boat or pickup. The cell companies offer air cards for laptops. When I need to travel and work, looking for a wifi hotspot is lame. Driving to the office could take thirty minutes each way easy, that easily pays the eighty a month for unlimitted access. and it is faster than dialup and almost as fast as cable. I wish sattelite ISPs were cheaper but they are places I have needed and used other peoples.

Re: Kbon 101

Chad, first let me correct you. It's $60.00 oer YEAR not per quarter.

Secondly, you may have listened all those years for "free" to YOU, but you must surely know that streaming is not free. Somoene has to pay for it. In this case it was me and some voluntary donations from listeners paying for you to listen. In other words, you were gettig a free ride at the expense of others.

Let me try to explain:

For many years, Louisiana Proud Radio provided unlimited free Streaming Audio for thousands of Cajun, Swamp Pop, and Zydeco music fans worldwide. Over the years, many of our loyal fans became supporters and proudly contributed to a fund to help us offset the substantial (and constantly growing) costs of providing audio streams.

Unfortunately, only a small fraction of the listening audience contributed to the streaming audio fund -- leaving the station responsible for large unmet monthly streaming costs. While we are truly grateful for the support of our loyal fans, it became clear that the station could not afford to continue to subsidize the thousands of free streaming sessions logged each day.

The solution of simply shutting down the streams was totally and resoundingly rejected. After much discussion and planning (and prayer!) we developed the KBON Club. This solution allows the station to continue to provide a small number of free streams for casual listeners and new visitors, but it also gives our loyal fans and fans of Louisiana Music a great way to help us keep the music alive on the Internet.

There are limited FREE streams, but the higher quality and more benefits streaming will be $6.00 per month or $60.00 per year (you save $12.00 by paying annually).

Remember your membership not only gives you access to uninterruped high quality sterio streaming, but it also you to take advantage of discounts on monthly featured items, including music. Check out the
monthly CD specials, including a great MARDI GRAS music collection this month, at only $13.95, including FREE shipping anywhere in the continental United States. That's a savings of $5.00 per CD. If you buy only one per month you will save enough to pay your KBON CLUB membership!

You are also eligible for give-a-ways, and you don't even have to be listening to win, If you're name is selected, you are notified by email and have up to seven days to get back to us and acknowledge our email and send us your mailing address and if are from out of our area, your winning will be mailed to you.

Be part of the future of radio... right now... with your favorite radio station... KBON 101.1. Go to "kbonclub.com" and join the KBON CLUB. Do it right now.
