Re: sammy naquin?

There's some information about Sam at the third link posted with this message. He relocated to Seneca Falls, NY from NOLA as a direct result of Hurricane Katrina. His significant other, musician Debra Wilson, had worked in the dental laboratory industry, and she accepted a job offer from a dental lab based in Seneca Falls. Following is from an email promo for Sammy's debut show in Rochester, that tells the story:

"Born and raised in the bayous of South Louisiana. Two years ago, Sammy Naquin never would have thought he'd be living Seneca Falls NY, working on jump-starting his musical career. Cajun Zydeco music was taught to Sammy Naquin by his musician father and became a way of life. He started playing accordion professionally at the age of 15 when he put together a band with his brother and friends to play parties and fundraisers. They still get together to play functions today, 25 years later. Sammy has recorded with and toured with many bands and musicians including the world renowned Rusty Kershaw. Playing for celebrity parties and functions led to him recording soundtracks for commercials, movies and television shows. You may have heard his music on the television series, The Big Easy. So , two years ago Sammy was at the peek of his musical career playing on Bourbon Street. Then Hurricane Katrina hit."

"Sammy and his love, Debra Wilson, lost nearly everything. They relocated to upstate NY for a variety of reasons. For the past year and a half, Sammy has been working as a tradesman for a local heating and cooling company. On a couple occasions his past connections kicked into gear, landing him on an airplane to meet up with his old band mates that have also been strewn throughout the map of the US – a huge festival at a Casino in Minnesota, a blow out private party in Philly. But he always came back to the silence of Seneca Falls. With the anniversary of Katrina, Sammy pledged to himself, “It’s time to rise once again, and make music my life yet again.” The time has come."

"People throughout the country have cared deeply about our brothers and sisters who suffered from the ravage of Hurricane Katrina, and here is a chance for folks to support and hear (in music and story) a clear, humorous, and vibrant voice tell/sing his story. Over the years Sammy has entertained thousands and thousands of people in the magic city of New Orleans with his music and homespun whit. He’s ready to ride again with his new band, Sammy Naquin and The Zydeco Whips. Be sure to join Rochester in warmly welcoming Sammy to our community!"

Re: sammy naquin?

Mr. Jay,
Bonjour! I always enjoy looking up links involving my brother's name and enjoyed seeing this question of his identity. I am his little sister from the town of Houma, Louisiana (about an hour southwest of NOLA) and this is the town were we and our five brothers and sisters were born and raised. Sammy is in town visiting with the family this weekend and we are actually hoping he will give the area another chance to see that we have recouperated from Katrina and Rita. Please check out my brother's homepage and look for his music on sites like Rhapsody and other sharing sites. If you are ever in our area and would like to look up any playing gigs for Sammy the last name is pronounced "Knock-Can" and that will get you further with the locals than the English pronunciation! Great to see fans of Cajun music and heritage across the nation... "Laissez le bontempts rouler!"
