Re: What is a good replacement spring for a Hohner 114 bass side?
Hey Bruce,
I broke one of those bass spoon springs years ago on my starter Hohner. I'd guess that if you were handy, you could round up some spring steel of the proper diameter and fabricate one.
Me, I'm not up to that. I ended up actually calling the American Hohner representative and he sent me one for a couple bucks purchase & a couple more postage & handling.
I don't recall the exact figures and I don't have the phone number after all this time, but you could probably Google it.

Oh boyzie, A chance for me to give some cobjob advice !!
My first try I took a large safety pin and cut the sharp part and the hook part off. The hardest part was popping out the pin and being sure I could get it back on with the "spring" tension held as I put it back together.
That actually didnt end up working as the tension was not enough. I later ended up using the spring from one of those screw in wall mount things...wall anchor? one of those press it into the wall and it springs open again allowing yout to tighten the screw into the wall securing yer stuff....
Anyway, I used one so big I would never think to drill a hole that size in my wall, but the sping in that thig is wound as ever...
Or,....you could call Homer....er Honer...
Re: What is a good replacement spring for a Hohner 114 bass side?
Hope you have better luck with your 114. I got mine new in 2004 and went through three or four bass springs in about two months. In the end I got so fed up with it I sold it on for a small loss (new owner seems to have got hold of better quality springs).
Re: Re: What is a good replacement spring for a Hohner 114 bass side?
Stay on 'em. I ordered some parts a few months ago, and it took about 7-8 calls over about 1 1/2 months to the same very uninterested parts guy. He always told me "Been busy, I'll get yours out in the next day or so". Finally called and talked to a supervisor and got the parts that week.
Re: If you get stuck, let me know, because I have a couple laying around somewhere.
You say you took the spoons off-did you replace them with the same type of buttons as the Louisiana-made accordions? I sure wouldn't mind doing that if it's an easy modification.
Re: Re: If you get stuck, let me know, because I have a couple laying around somewhere.
Hi Keith,
I had a whole new bass box made, and the builder sent back all the old parts. I must say it was a worthwhile upgrade.
I was working with Charlie Ortego for that, but he is deceased. I know that Larry Miller has done the same thing for other people, but he has retired. But, I suspect that you could find someone to do it for you.
I replaced the bass box on my Hohner 114 with the bass box from one of these cheap Chinese accordions. It fit very well and took me about twenty minutes.
Never had any problems with it since.
Now my cheap Chinese box have spoon basses, but that don't bother me much :)

Wow! Hohner came through, today there was 3 replacement springs for my box, free of charge. I'm glad I didn't have to haggle with the guy to send them. I got my box fixed in about 10 minutes and went and jammed on the street in a small town here. Got my pic took by the newspaper man who had never seen a Cajun Box played in Bluegrass Country. Bruce
