Re: Accordion Repair -- Bass Box Spring

Nick: The only thing I can think of that might be helpful if you want to do this DIY, is to watch the DIY how to make an accordion show that was displayed recently, featuring Marc Savoy.
In one of the episodes, he shows how he installs the springs into the base box... Just a thought. If you can't find the show, let me know and I can ask my son to copy the dvd copy I have. By understanding how he installs the springs and how he builds that box, you might be able to figure it out.
Bonne chance avec ça.

Re: Re: Accordion Repair -- Bass Box Spring

If you take those 4 screws off and look in the base box, it should be pretty apparent how to fix the spring if it is just off. They have points that are jammed in the wood. I'd definately have a look before going through the trouble of sending it in.

Re: Accordion Repair -- Bass Box Spring

Nick just do as bryan says, remove the 4 screws and the problem should be obvious. I have taken apart old accordions before. You will see how low tech it actually is. It's not rocket science. You will wonder how something so simple can make such beautiful music.

Re: Accordion Repair -- Bass Box Spring

Hi,I am not new in this forum but I have not post the message for a long time.

>one of the bass button springs,
>the lower one, "popped".
exactly same thing happened with my Acadian D box last year.(about 2 years old at that moment)
I opened and checked the bass side.
The spring was cracked in half.
I called Savoy Music and asked to send me some springs and fixed it by muself.

Well, when I put the bass box back, somehow I screwed it upside down....
I thought I ruin the accordion!
Be careful, but if you can do it by yourself.

Re: Re: Accordion Repair -- Bass Box Spring

Hey Nick, did you get that problem figured out?

I never had that happen before. I can't imagine that the V spring broke already. Man, that would **** me off! To get a replacement spring it would have to be the same tension as the other one or it'll drive you mad.

I've loosened springs on my bass side, so taking that part off is easy, but aligning the screw holes, when reassembling is the hardest part.

Took me an hour to line up the screws with the holes!

Let me know if you got it fixed.

Re: Re: Re: Accordion Repair -- Bass Box Spring

Hi Nick. Don't be afraid to open it up and you will see what is wrong in an instant. If you need it fixed right and quick, take it to Alex Accordions on 48th St. He has worked on my single rows and my triple and he can fix it ASAP.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Accordion Repair -- Bass Box Spring

Thanks, y'all. I'll take a look at it tonight. If I can't fix it myself, I'll take it to Alex on 48th St.

You know, Balfa Camp should teach a short course on accordion repair. Wouldn't be a bad idea...

Best,

Nick B

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Accordion Repair -- Bass Box Spring

Hey Nick,

A little trick to make sure the holes are lined up when you're re-assembling the accordion is to take four tooth picks and slightly insert them into the holes on the bass side of the accordion as a guide.

Re: Accordion Repair -- Bass Box Spring

Nick, the spring is most likely a #2 safety pin which is what most builders use. You can get these at wal-mart, cut the top end off of it where the latch it self is so that you are holding a V with the spring coil at the bottom. Then bend about a 1/8" L on the top of both open ends so that the whole thing looks like a V with a small leg pointing to the left and a leg pointing to the right. Take the two facing screws off, then unscrew the four screws which hold the bass box on, if you look inside the box you should then see two holes where the spring was jammed in before. Insert the two small legs into the opposing holes and push them down using a flat head screwdriver. This should fix you... If you want the tension tighter, bend the spring open wider before you put it in. Hope it makes sense ?

Re: Re: Accordion Repair -- Bass Box Spring

I have to disagree.
Most builders have gotten away from using safety pins anymore. They don't have the temper to hold up very well. (they are now very cheaply made in off-shore factories) The safety pins, that is...

Call up Marc and he will definitely send you a new spring. (Probably for free.)

Re: Re: Re: Accordion Repair -- Bass Box Spring

Hoo boy,

What a great forum we have here. I was able to take everything apart no prob. I wasn't able to find great safety pins, but I did score some at the 99 cent store. They seem a tad weaker than I would like, but I was able to install it and put the whole thing back together (and yes, the most annoying part is lining up the four screws for the handle.

It works fine now. I'm not crazy about the spring itself, but I'll contact Marc tomorrow -- maybe he can send the one he uses.

Now I know exactly how to pop one in.

For the time being, this box is definitely in playing condition.

Thanks, y'all!

Re: Re: Re: Re: Accordion Repair -- Bass Box Spring

Excellent, glad it all worked out!

Re: Re: Re: Re: Accordion Repair -- Bass Box Spring

Nick, the other one was broken?

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Accordion Repair -- Bass Box Spring

Yes. The spring was actually broken. Frankly, it had always felt "weak", much more so than my other Acadian, which feels a little more solid.

It's amazing to open up your accordion and see how simple it looks. There's obviously some "mojo" going on, though, cuz all of my boxes sound great.

They all sound good, because you sound good!
