He starts off pushing. when the chord changes to E, he pulls. When it changes to D, he is still pulling. He is playing in the key of A on an A accordion in the position. It could be played in A on a D accordion in second position.
I think the Redstick Ramblers were one of the first to record this song and they do a helluva job on it. You can also find it on the Savoy Michot band cd. Wilson sings it on this one. It is just the 99 year waltz as a two step.
Another tune with the same melody line is on Bonsoir Catin's new CD. Cinquante Piastre. Great tune as well.
I haven't been on this board for a while and just saw your message.
It's indeed played in the key of A on an A-accordion (made by John Roger).
It's a two-step version of 99 Year Waltz and as far as I heard Wilson Savoy wrote it for the Red Stick Ramblers (it's on their cd "Bring It On Down")
You sure are correct, Mr. Messany! Wil wrote it, but he was too sick to play when the Ramblers needed to record it, so Stevie stepped in to do it for them.
