This week it's been the waltzes on Steve Riley and the Mamou Playboys CDs. They have an elegant approach to the traditional waltzes. Last week, Balfa Toujours "La Pointe" and "Live at Whiskey River," Jason Frey/Travis Matte's CD, and a new recording by Jesse Lege, who went into the studio with Joel Savoy, Bobby Michot, and Eric Frey just before their 2007 European tour.
Lately its been pretty equal time for Cajun Fais Do-Do, the new Maurice Berzas cd's Tina Pilione put out, and a Savoy compilation. Cajun Fais Do Do has given me a new appreciation for Amede Breaux's playing. And Marc, well, he's pretty decent..
Pine Leaf Boys, « La Musique » (tradition, energy, great accordion playing, Cedric Watson’s fiddle playing and singing).
Harry Trahan, « A La Maison » (the title says it all)
S. Riley, M. Reed, K. Wimmer... « Racines » (love the fiddle reels and the way they are played)
Lee Benoit, « Ma Petite Femme » (original songs and pleasant renditions of the more traditional ones).
At the moment it is "Evangeline Made" a group project produced by Ann Savoy. "La Musique" by Pine Leaf Boys, and "Quand J'ai Parti" by David Doucet. Also appearing recently are Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Rodney Crowell, Patty Griffin, Mamou Playboys, Asleep at the Wheel, Robert Earl Keen, Bill Monroe, and Robert Johnson. The Refreshments, John Hiatt, Jethro Tull, Tom Petty etc etc etc. Austin is a great place to hear a huge variety of music. My only complaint is that Cajun bands are scarce.
Right now in my CD player that is the bathroom, love listening to music while I shower, is Marc and the Boiled Crawfish CD Swamp'N'Spice. Always have a few more laying next to my player and they are Jude Moreau and the Bon Temps Playboys, Retourner au Les Vieux Temps, also T-Sale CD and The Balfa Brothers play traditional Cajun music Vol I and II.
