Re: Cajun/Zydeco hall of fame

Now that is an interesting film...so what exactly is the "Cajun Zydeco Hall of Fame?" It is an interesting combination of people who ostensibly qualify for entry into any Hall of Fame.

Speaking of Jo-El Sonnier, his performance at the Heritage Stage at Festivals Acadiens was one of the highlights of the Festival. He is getting a bit older and his voice is not always as strong as it has been, but he is still in command of his band and the audience...and he paid tribute to Will Kegley and Wilson Granger!

I'm not sure that they had practiced for the performance; but when he wanted them to play, he would motion to them. And play they did! Some of the fiddle breaks by Tony Thibodeaux and Beau Thomas were incredible. Then he would motion to Junior Martin for his turn, and Junior Martin would play some beautiful steel guitar. This went on for almost the entire performance until finally, when he motioned to Junior Martin, Junior just shook his head - he was done. For me, it was one of the highlights of the Festival.

That last still photo of a fiddler after Amazing Grace. That was Merlin Fontenot! No?

Yes it was, Neal. He is quite a character. I've had a couple of visits with him at Vermilionville in Lafayette. He is often at the old schoolhouse there.
