Well, the Leo Soileau CD liner notes and Ann Savoy's book call him Mayeus. The book "Memories" by Johnie Allan has a picture of him and a spelling of Mayeuse.
That's all I have had a chance to check, but there are others. I have never seen it spelled Meus.

The surname, in french, is "Marius" (I think).

I think that is a different name. "Meus" has been written "Mayeus, Maius" and maybe a few ways, there is no "r" sound in it.
