Two Steps and their Sister Waltzes

Anytime my band places a gig where folks are dancing I feel like we're wearing them out with all the two steps and not enough waltzes so I'm trying to get more bang for my learning buck by learning songs that have lives as both Waltzes and Two Steps. That way we can play either if the situation calls for it and the rest of the band has an easier time learning the song since they already know it. For instance Midland Two Step and Cherokee Waltz. Jim had Big Boy Waltz which is mighty similar to Wafus Two Step. Same song, different tempos. Does anybody have any others?

Re: Two Steps and their Sister Waltzes

Travis Matte does a good job of making a two-step out of Kaplan Waltz, so I guess you could do that. Why not just learn and rehearse a bunch of new waltzes and add them to the bands rep?

Tit Monde and Rayne Playboy special by Nathan Menard is another. I've never heard anyone else do Rayne Playboy special, not sure why, I love it.

Re: Two Steps and their Sister Waltzes

Dans Les Misere by Rodney Lejeune is the Laccasine Special played as a waltz, La Valse de Bayou Lafourche by Happy Fats and Doc Guidry, is the same as Les Veuve de La Coulee' played as a waltz. If I think of more you will know.

Re: Two Steps and their Sister Waltzes

Ah, Lacassine and Dans Les Miseres, the lost bayou ramblers also recorded it, great song.

Re: Two Steps and their Sister Waltzes

The version by Rodney Lejeune can not be beat. He owns that song. I also like his version of "Fille La Veuve". The way he sang those songs were just the best.

Re: Two Steps and their Sister Waltzes

(Didn't we have this discussion before?) But Accordion Two Step is very
close to the Rayne Playboy Special. The former is on High Performance
Vol II and Jimmy Breaux did it on the Festival Acadienne CD, I think.

I learned Tit Monde and Accordion Two Step from Paul Daigle, who recorded the two step long ago (with a guy name Michael Doucet on fiddle). BTW, Paul D,
who lives in Rayne area, doesn't recall the Rayne Playboy Special.

I just love these Cajun song mysteries.

Re: Two Steps and their Sister Waltzes

Yeah, I thought we had, but I just couldn't find the thread. To answer your question JB, I would like to learn new songs, but the rythym section of the band I play in have too many irons in the fire to be able to set them all down and learn new material right now. These two guys are jazz, rock, and country pros and the cajun band is just one of their many side projects. I have about 5 new songs that I want to introduce to the set lists but the one of the only times we have to get together is when we are at a gig. If I can find songs that I can turn into Waltzes that we already play then I save them a lot of time which makes them happy.

Thanks for the suggestions! We play Laccasine so I'll look into Dans Les Misere.

Re: Two Steps and their Sister Waltzes

Hey Ehren your parents said Hi!! We all went to see Jr Martin today ( LA finest) and Marilyn played Joels tripple row turned that zydeco box into ummmmm pah right away. Joel was impressed.

Re: Two Steps and their Sister Waltzes

I had started a discussion on both this and on playing the same song in different positions. Been a while though.

Re: Two Steps and their Sister Waltzes

A solution could be to play after each two step a waltz and after each waltz a two step.
But from some waltzes the dancers are getting more tired than from a two step.
But it's great to know all the two step/waltz songs that are similar.
Awesome question !!

Re: Two Steps and their Sister Waltzes

But you don't want to play too many songs in the same key one after the other. It starts sounding repetitious, play a song in C then maybe a few in G then maybe someting in F then back to C. If you know that many songs anyway. I am working on it I'll report back later with my progress.

Re: Two Steps and their Sister Waltzes

You're right about repetitious, but with a C and a D accordion there are more keys to play in.
We change two steps and waltzes for the dancers.
How does it goes nowadays and how did it go in the past in the dancehalls ? Do or did they play more two steps than waltzes ?
We play about 75 songs now with the band.

Re: Two Steps and their Sister Waltzes

mostly it ws a waltz then a two step sometimes if the band drank too many Schlitz then they might play two two steps in a row or maybe three.

75 songs

Hey, Ron, if you have a gig here or there with the DTCB, let me know. I wanna hear all them 75 songs!
