Re: Cajun from Church Point

The Balfa Brothers do it on the Rounder release J'ai vu le loup, le renard, et la belette, recorded by Gerard Dôle.
http://www.rounder.com/artist/default.aspx?aid=97880

Then Dewey Balfa also did it with Rodney Balfa and Allie Young on his Smithsonian Folkways instructional lp, on the side with Dewey's radio show from Basile over station KEUN.

Merle Haggard's lyrics talk about smoking marijuana, burning draft cards, leather boots rather than sandals, football still the roughest thing on campus, and white lightnin' still the biggest thrill of all etc. The lyrics to this Cajunized song instead are about making boucheries in the winter, eating boudin on main street, and love being "le plus grand agrément" or "le plus grand 'thrill' du tout."

Re: Cajun from Church Point

I know also :
Balfa Brothers
Kevin Naquin
Jackie Caillier
Richard LeBouef
Beausoleil
Balfa and D.L. Menard
Donald Thibodeaux
Downtown Cajun Band (NL)
Big Bayou Bandits (Belgium)
Vermenton Plage (FR)
etc...
....... and the original song (I think) "Okie from Muskogee" by Merle Haggard (link#1)

Marc.

Re: Cajun from Church Point

Dallas Roy was first to record it. I will find out today who wrote it.

Hey look whose back!

Re: Cajun from Church Point

It was first recorded by Dallas Roy with Jackie Caillier on accordion. I think Jackie was around 15 or 17 years old. It is the melody of Okie from Muskogee with an extra chord in it. The lyrics were not a direct translation, but sort of related. The Balfas also did it, but there lyrics were much closer to be a direct translation.

Re: Cajun from Church Point

Eddie LeJeune did a very nice version on the Cajun Spirit album

Re: Cajun from Church Point

Re: Cajun from Church Point

Found these transcriptions posted by Marc and by Neal a while back:

Cadien de Church Point
-------------------------------
From Marc:

(Grand Eunice, Grand Mamou, etc ……)

--------------------------------------
From NEAL:

One verse says love is their greatest pleasure, another says it's their biggest thrill of all (like in the original Okie from Muscogee).
-------------------------------

Merle Haggard;
OKIE FROM MUSKOGEE

We don’t smoke marihuana in Muskogee
We don’t take our trips on LSD
We don’t burn our draft cards down on Main Street
‘Cause we like living right and being free

We don’t make a party out of loving
But we like holding hands and pitching woo
We don’t let our hair grow long and shaggy
Like the hippies out in San Francisco do

And I’m proud to be an Okie from Muskogee
A place were even squares can have a ball
We still wave Old Glory down at the courthouse
White lightning still the biggest thrill of all

Leather boots are still in style for manly footwear
Beads and Roman sandals won’t be seen
And football’s still the roughest thing on campus
And the kids they still respect the College Dean

Ch+ White lightning still the biggest thrill of all, In Muskogee Oklahoma USA

Re: Cajun from Church Point

Unfortunately neither of these lyrics are correct according to the original recording by Dallas Roy.

Re: Cajun from Church Point

Dallas Roy, he's must be from Texas, Cajuns say they got two moons there, so when both are full they must be getting quite looney there.
