Re: Anyone listened to: Grand Isle? (the new Mamou Playboy's CD?)

I have heard a few of the songs off the new cd through kbon and there is only one i like. I think its called "Honest papa loves momma's better" or somthing like that

Re: Anyone listened to: Grand Isle? (the new Mamou Playboy's CD?)

I have the cd, it is a good cd but don't expect it to be a tradional album. It is more on the side of Bon Reve. The Mamou Playboys do a good job of moving the peg a little further down the road.

It’s an evolution, new and disconcerting. Difficult to sing "Flammes d'enfer" or "Zydeco est pas salé" during 50 years !! But the musicians are always so good.
Personnaly, I like well “Non je ne regrette rien" (old French song from Edith Piaf), very amazing slower version . And also “C’est ennuyant” and “Valse de chagrin”.
Not their best CD, not the most bad.

Marc.

Re: Anyone listened to: Grand Isle? (the new Mamou Playboy's CD?)

I have it. I like it, but I don't see many of those songs becoming standards at jams.

One thing that disappoints me is that the CD seems to be taking Cajun music into a "studio" direction. (In other words, you won't be able to play some of this stuff unless you have a studio full of equipment on hand).

So, in a way, it takes the music out of the hands of the people and moves it into the more rarified arena of professional musicians only.

Still, I love listening to the stuff great studio musicians come out with, and I'm enjoying listening to this album.

No, but I used to go to Grand Isle some weekends.

Re: Anyone listened to: Grand Isle? (the new Mamou Playboy's CD?)

It's sorta prog Cajun, which is fine by me. These guys have earned the right not to repeat themselves.

The traditional tune is my favorite, though - Lyons Point. It's recorded as one track, I believe, with no overdubs. Has a great feel...

I bought the cd from them at La Poussiere. Great album! and you sure are right Mr. Beaudoing Lyons Point is an awesome song. Is this an original tune of theirs? or is it a traditional tune ? accordion, fiddle, vocals, and a tit fer. Dont get any better

Re: Anyone listened to: Grand Isle? (the new Mamou Playboy's CD?)

Got my copy last week and I've listened to it a couple of times, still familiarizing myself with it. I find it quite different, much more mellow than the previous material, refreshing and outside of beaten paths. Worth it!
