Beginner songs

Since I am brand new to the accordion and not Cajun, what would be some good folk or country songs that would sound good and easy for a beginner to play on the accordion?
Thanks,
BB

Re: Beginner songs

Welcome to the world of Cajun accordions

I assume that you're playing by ear ..

I would hazard to say that any song that can be played
on a harmonica could be played on a Cajun accordion.

The instrument sports a diatonic scale, so you have
no sharps/flats in its native key.

To answer the questions: 'what songs would sound good'
I'd guess that it would depend more on the player
than the instrument.

Song songs will just *not* work on the Cajun
accordion.

You might look at a few tunes that I had posted
a millions years ago here:

Best of luck and let us know how it works for you!

Re: Beginner songs

Thanks Big Nick. I just ordered your DVD.

Re: Beginner songs

Great .. Thank you & hope you enjoy it.

I am about to finish Voume 2 that will feature much more
beginning instruction.

It will feature 2-DVD's and an audio CD with
accompaniments for playing along.

Almost 4 hours of instruction.

I'll get off my soap box now

Re: Beginner songs

Let me climb on that soap box then. My turn now for a little speech.
You can safely rely on this man, Bobo.
There are few people who have done so much for teaching Cajun accordion as our own big Nick, and all that essentially on a non-profit base. I think he was the first, and maybe the only to make free Cajun accordion lessons available on the internet. And he manages this Forum we all love so much. So ....
Three cheers for BN !!!

Re: Beginner songs

Yes, Mr Big got me playing

Re: Beginner songs

Evangeline Special was my first. Its a simple melody and it is easy to add tricks to it and it eventually ties together.

Re: Beginner songs

Here is Jo-El adding some tricks and then some to Evangeline Special [8-)]

Re: Beginner songs

anyone care to put up a lesson for Evangeline Special? It just so happens to be on my list of songs to learn as well.

Re: Beginner songs

I would recommend the Wafus Two Step. It's an easy song to learn and then you can spruce it up a bit once you get comfortable with it. Definitely buy Big Nick's DVD. I bought Vol 1 and never regretted it. It was worth every penny and then some. NIck is an excellent teacher and the DVDs are professionally done. I've seen others and they pale in comparison to Big NIcks. I would also strongly recommend the Amazing Slow Downer. I use it to learn my cajun tunes and some Irish tunes as well. You can literally slow down a song without changing the pitch. It is worth the $49.95. This is a must if you play by ear. Good luck and keep squeezin'.
