Re: unit activation and deployment

Sorry for this late reply - but I don't check this site as frequent as I should. And you probable published your aticle all ready.

The 9th Infantry Division published their history via a hard back folio. No publisher is named. The book shows that the 9th Infantry Division was "Reactivated Feb 1, 1966 at Fort Riley, Kansas." Obviously, the 5th/60th Battalion and its components were reactivated on that same day.

I joined the Batallion commanded at that time by Lt. Col Lucus K Truscott in July of 1966 as the first Company Commander of "B" (Bravo) Company. I later was transferred within the Battalion and became Commander of H&HQ Company and remains so through deployment at the end of November 1966 and was in theater until 8/30/67.

As to the exact deployment date is concerned - it was a process that began with advance parties flying to VN to accomplish preparations for the Division's arrival and shippment of equipment. To my recollection those began in October '66 with the body of the Batallion leaving on or about November 29 or 30 and it's landing in VN on December 18th. After that a final deployment party left Fort Riley probably on on about the end of December.

As you can imagine, moving the numbers of soldiers, tanks, artillery and supplys was a task of major doing and I could not give you an exact date.

Hope this helps you or fills in your knowledge of the history of the Battallion
