There was an old gentleman, Corey was his name, I think, who was a regular
at
> the Ingleneuk every Sunday for a number of years around the
> Seventies. Apparently he lived with the nuns over in Tollcross and was
employed there as a sort
> of caretaker, I believe. I have been trying to discover the title of the
song
> that he sang every Sunday as he left the billiard room where he enjoyed
the
> company of the regulars. I've spoken to Phil or Neil Tully who told me
that the
> title was " I'm only an old Rough Diamond" or something like that. Corey
had a
> fascinating history from the great depression in America riding freight
> trains to boxing and show business.
> He was highly thought of by the staff, Tully, Tam Hart etc., and the
locals
> and my strongest memory is of him doffing his hat as he exited the room on
the
> closing note of the song. Pure show-biz!
> Help please to locate the song that he sang.
Hi Pete,
The Song is actually called " I'm only a Strolling Vagabond" and was sung by Cavan O'Connor. I have a CD, number SUN 2141 issued by Sunflower Records in 2003. The Company is Broadswoed International Ltd. I hope this helps.
By the way, Did you often plunk the school at St Charles and St Brides? If so, we were pals as schoolboys!! I lived in Westburn.
Kind regards,
Ronnie.
