How can you be sure you have a First Edition

This is probally a simple minded question, but I am new to collecting hardback Clive Cussler Books. Any inforfation will be very helpful to me.

The easiest way is to read the number line on the inside cover where all the library of congress info is.
If the numbers end in 1 then it's a first edition
