What is a Good Stater Cussler book for a grad?

My son is about to graduate from high school and very much like non-fiction books about wars specifically anything involving the navy. As to fiction he has enjoyed some of the Hornblower series, and I would like to get him interested in Cussler this summer.
I have not read all of Cussler's books, but wondered what would be a good starter novel in any of the series for an 18 year old? I was thinkig of getting him "Corsair" because of the US Navy battle which begins the book (I read the exciting sample on my Kindle).
I appreciate your thoughts!

I haven't read Corsair yet and haven't read any Cussler books yet primarily about the Navy.

This spring, I read my first Tom Clancy book "Red Storm Rising." Large portions of the book were about subs and frigate operations in war. I enjoyed it a lot; I thought it was very realistic, but is a bit different from Cussler's Dirk Pitt novels... it didn't have quite the same fun, far-fetched stuff or humor.

Let me clarify...the Cussler book does not have to be about the Navy...the fact that all these have ocean affiliations is enough.

My basic question - for an 18 year old who will probably enjoy a sea adventure...what is the best Cussler book to start him off with?

I tried to post yesterday, but it might not have gone through since I included a link. It's hard to predict what someone will like, but Deep Six is my favorite Dirk Pitt series Cussler book. The novel includes an exciting presidential yacht scene, a secret enemy barge, and a dramatic battle with a steamboat.

Maybe some others will share their thoughts...

Good luck!

Dear Peter, I started reading Matthew Reilly books which hooked me into some serious fiction and adventure. My craving for more led me to Andy McDermott and now I have just purchased all 39 Books by Clive Cussler. I personally don't think it matters which book you buy him, there all very good in different ways. Iceberg and Mayday which is The Mediterranean Caper were good and also Arctic Drift. I hope you can sort out what to do. Lots of luck.

here's my take...I started with the NUMA files, start with the first one...main character Kurt Austin puts a lot of 'fun' into solving mysteries, he's the type of character that I think a guy of 18 would want to be, including partnering-up with a female each story - not so much with Juan Cabrillo of the Oregon files, he's a serious guy...don't know about Dirk Pitt...
Cheers

Hi Seas, You'll find Dirk Pitt to be almost like Kurt Austin, but better. Dirk was the first and and I think the best of the book series. Try some of the earlier Pitt books. They are really good.

My first Dirk Pitt book was Treasure and I was hooked. Every book is so good and captivating it won't matter which one you get him.
