Hello,
Ploughed through your site trying to find a suitable entry point; this is not the optimal point but here goes ------
I do hope you have been preparing better than the people in the Pentagon for this war because unless the Butcher of Baghdad and his murderous henchmen are wiped from Planet Earth pretty swiftly, like in the next 48 hours or so, you people are going to find yourselves overwhelmed with work.
Several thousand Australians became Prisoners-Of-War of the brutal Japanese Empire when the British surrendered in Singapore in 1942; it is something burnt into the soul of every Australian, just as Andersonville is etched into the souls of Americans. There are a couple of thousand Australians fighting against Saddam Hussein right now; if they, along with thousands of US and British troops, are taken prisoner or become MIAs, it is unlikely that we will have the people or resourses here in Australia to do any more than exchange whatever meagre information we stumble across with your people. I might have been able to help a little bit way back in 1984, even if it was only with negative information; this time around, I can only offer my sympathy: I don't know the language; I don't know the country: I have no contacts whatsoever, not even in humanitarian organizations like the Red Cresent; Baghdad is not Ha Noi or SaiGon.
I hope for the safe and speedy return of the POWs and MIAs now in Iraq.
All the best, Graham Bell
(Australian Regular Army SVN 1966-1967)
