Questions to ask your photographer

After the ceremony is over and the guests go home, it goes without saying that the photographs from your wedding or bar/bat mitzvah will be what you treasure most from your special day. For years afterwards, you will pull out your albums, tell stories and reminisce over your favorite photographs. Many of the pictures will decorate the walls of your home, and one or two might even be handed down several generations to be cherished by your children and relatives for years to come. With this in mind, selecting your photographer is one of the most important things you will do in planning your big day. While staying within your budget is critical in event planning, try to find ways to save money elsewhere so you can get the best photographs you can afford. You can find a photographer by requesting suggestions from people you trust or by looking in church/temple newsletters or local directories. Interview several candidates before making a selection, and always ask for references. Below is a list of questions to assist you when speaking with potential photographers:



1) Can we see samples of your work?

2) How many years have you been photographing weddings? How many weddings or big events do you do in a year? Where did you get your training from?

3) What type of camera and film do you use? What equipment do you bring with you and where is it set up?

4) Have you photographed at our location/church/temple/reception hall previously? Do you know where it is? Where would you suggest taking photos in that location?

5) Are you free the day of our event? Will you be working other weddings/receptions that day?

6) What photos do you recommend taking? Will you accept recommendations of photos to take from us?

7) How many photos do you take during the event? How long do you spend taking photos at the church/temple/reception hall?

8) Do you also take videos? If not, do you have a recommendation of someone who could take videos for us?

9) Do you bring assistants and what is their role?

10) What is your procedure for photographing the guest tables during the reception? How long does this typically take? What do you recommend we do during the reception at this time to make sure our guests stay at their tables long enough to be photographed? For example, should we tell the DJ to play quiet music in the background so people do not go up to the dance floor during this period?

11) What arrangements do you have in place in the event of an illness or accident where you can not make it?

12) Do you take a break during the reception and for how long? Do you expect a sandwich for you and your assistant during the reception?

13) How long does it take to get the proofs? How long will we have to look at the proofs before we have to get our final selections back to you? How long after we select the proofs will we get the final albums?

14) What are your prices? What albums are in your standard pricing? What is extra? Can parents, grandparents and other relatives purchase albums? How can reprints be ordered?

15) Who develops the negatives? How long are they retained for?

16) Do you post the photos online? Can the photos be put on a CD disk? (This is an emerging service, but some photographers will provide it.)

17) If you do videos, when will we get the tape? Can we get a DVD? What are your price packages for the videos? Can we order extra copies? Can the video be put online for relatives to view or purchase?

18) How far in advance do we have to place a contract with you?

19) Do you have a contract? When does it have to be returned? Do you have a payment schedule?

20) Do you have references?

21) Do you have a business card or e-mail address if we have future questions?

22) When should we speak again?
