Hi Julia, sorry I have not replied earlier. My computer crashed and it has taken me until now to get it going again!

Alek is now 14 months old and we are still nursing pretty happily. There are a bunch of La Leche League meetings in the area if you would like to meet some moms face to face! They are the first Tues of each month in Bay St. Lois at 9:30 am at the Hancock Medical Center Education building on Hwy 90, the 2nd Thursday of each month in Ocean Springs at 9:30 am at the Christus Victor church on Hwy 90 and there is an evening one in Gulfport that I am not sure about. You can call the WIC office and ask to speak to the lactation consultant to get more information if you need it. Also if you are enrolled or (eligible to enroll in WIC and enroll) they have breastfeeding peer counselors who are breastfeeding moms helping other moms who will call you on a semi-regular basis to see how things are going and that you can call any time if you have trouble. Since we are in the military I use the hospital on base and we only go in emergencies since well baby check ups are a waste of time! League is a great place to get support. I am happy to tell you anything you would like to know about my breastfeeding experience. Cracked, bleeding nipples are usually a sign of incorrect positioning or latching on, they don't have to be a part of breastfeeding- it is possible to avoid them. I recommend taking any breastfeeding classes you can get to especially at the hospital at Keesler if you are affiliated with the military. The one thru WIC is really great too. I was lucky that I had a lot of support from family and was a breastfed baby myself. I hope all is well for you. I will check back soon to see if you wrote anything new---I promise!

I just moved here a few weeks ago and I am 8 months pregnant with my third child. After much research I have decided that breastfeeding is the only choice for our family. I did not breast feed my first child (completely ignorant I had no clue) I tried to breast feed my second child (complete disaster, zero support and once again ignorant). So this time I have been reading everything I can and I have been searching for a real live person who has breastfed a child sometime during this century! So far my only luck has been my husband's 75 year old grandmother so you can imagine how much she remembers; and an old friend who has had a less then typical experience with breastfeeding. I would love to hear about your experiences and I have about a million questions. Like, does everyone's nipples crack and bleed? Have you found a pediatrician locally who is supportive? Did you have to convince everyone around you the benefits of breastfeeding? Ok can't wait to hear from you.

YEAH for Compleat Mother!!! Afriend just gave me a copy after out LLL meeting and I LOVE it!!! I am hoping more moms on the gulf coast of Mississippi will read this and maybe contact me. Very unsupportive area with regards to us radicals!!! People look at me so funny when I say I breastfeed AND use cloth diapers!!! And then the next comment is how wonderfully behaved and happy my 10 month old son is. Go figure?
