Rare Beach Boys tape?

I've been a big fan of the Beach Boys for a long time now, so I was pretty surprised when a friend of mine emailed me an mp3 of this song, which is supposedly an unused Beach Boys backing track from around 1970. I have looked around online as well as on various bootlegs and I don't recognize this song from anywhere. My friend said that he got it from his brother, who is a recording engineer in Austin, TX. the song sounds kind of similar to stuff they were doing around the sunflower-surf's up era but i'm not convinced it's really them. any ideas?

thanks for any input, i posted it here:

Re: Rare Beach Boys tape?

Sorry ... but methinks not

Re: Rare Beach Boys tape?

Sounds reminiscent of Smile-era instrumentals to me, but I've never heard it before. If it was from 66/67 I wouldn't be surprised

Perhaps the REAL experts, Jon or Eddie could cast some light on it?

Re: Rare Beach Boys tape?

The real experts would be the people who were in the studio around that time frame...Not Jon Stebbins or Ed.. That music doesn't really have the BW sound IMO.

Re: Rare Beach Boys tape?

Well... I'm no muso, but this doesn't sound like any BB instrumental (and it is an instrumental, not a backing track) I've ever heard, nor any BB track from 1970/71. The 'feel' is all wrong. Stranger things have happened, but I'm pretty confident that no BB was in the studio while this was being recorded.
