Re: Creole / Zydeco Mardi Gras Song

From what I've learned about Zydeco music. You need to favor those top deep doubles buttons when you play it. Not always, but often. You should strive to include a few Zydeco songs into your Cajun repertoire when you play for people or a crowd. It livens things up when you're about to lose your audience to disinterest or boredom with the Cajun style. Yes play the Zydeco, but if you play it too often, white liberal women will show up out of nowhere and begin to throw themselves at you in various promiscuous ways in hopes of grouping up with you after the show. For some reason, Zydeco songs hippmotizes them into total and complete cold and sweaty submission.

So You Say You're Having Trouble with Zydeco C'est Pas Sale?

I know this is a little off the subject, but it just came to me because it is related to this post....Why learn "Zydeco C'est Pas Sale" from all the other copycats? Why not go to the original and take a stab at it yourself? The old "masters" learned it from listening to Clifton Cheniere's recording of it. Why shouldn't you? You'd be amazed what happens to your playing by ear when you play along with Clifton Cheniere. Get your "C" accordion and here we go!! Try to play it like you're a cool dude with some soul. Try those top deep doubles, but not too much. This song gets played all over the keyboard except for the top most button.

Re: So You Say You're Having Trouble with Zydeco C'est Pas Sale?

I sometimes play it, and I based my version on Cliff's. He used a piano note accordion, of course. I don't play piano note, so I play it on a triple row. I know there are single row versions of it out there, but to do any justice to Clifton's version, you really need to use a triple row or maybe a double row. Without that, you can't properly play that cool little bridge that starts around 1:10 in the recording. The fingering on a single row is awkward, and there are missing notes as well. There are other parts of the song with the same limitations.

Not saying not to try it on a single row, because that has definitely been done. But you will be frustrated and disappointed if you are hoping to make it sound a whole lot like Clifton's version.

Re: So You Say You're Having Trouble with Zydeco C'est Pas Sale?

I’m partial to this version. It’s actually a toss up between Valse de Bamboucher and this as my favorite Cajun song.

Re: My Zydeco/Creole Mardi Gras

Well played.
Glad you brought this one up.
I'm a fan of the boozoo version too,
can anyone help with the lyrics please?

Re: My Zydeco/Creole Mardi Gras

Lyrics (pardon my French :-) )

La danse de Mardi Grass (A-minor on a C accordion ? )

Principalement Grand Mamou
ça passe un fois par ans,
pour demander la charité

Capitain, capitain voyage ton flag
Allons aller chez l'autre voisin
Demander la charité
Vous autre, venez nous joindre
Vous autre, venez nous joindre, ouais
Pour le gumbo ce soir

Video of Chad Huval Playing Zydeco Mardi Gras

I found a video on Facebook of Chad Huval playing the song (with closeup on the keyboard!) which sounds very close to Boozoo's version. It was posted on the "Cajun French Virtual Table Francaise" Facebook page. Link below:

Re: So You Say You're Having Trouble with Zydeco C'est Pas Sale?

Just play it like this:

Re: So You Say You're Having Trouble with Zydeco C'est Pas Sale?

What the heck?!!! Chris Miller went and took David Greely out of his chosen obscurity and subjected him to the loud, fully amped stage scene just to make an attempt to outshine Steve Riley?!!! I don't know why I didn't think of doing that muhdamself. Brilliant! I wonder how Mr Greely is handling it? Is he teeter tottering on the edge of quiet and peaceful obscurity and the unhinged, over the top insanity of Cajun music comeback glory? We shall see folks.....we shall see.

Personally, I think David should find himself a very pretty girl from Canada who can sing in French with a high tenor voice and go on the road with her all over the world. Then in about 6 months or so, marry her and knock her up so that she can't quit the band. Hey wait just a cotton picken minute, this is starting to sound very familiar!
