how different could things have been?

Listening to the updated POB and a lot of live early 70's bootlegs makes me wonder...what if they just left Brian alone and let the Boy's carry on until he wanted to come back...if ever? Sacrilege!? I feel bad even saying it but they were doing just fine without Brian when Rolling Stone named them band of the year in '73. If Endless Summer never came out would they have continued to be a progressive rock band. Would songs from POB as well as some great songs from Carl's solo albums be Beach Boys classics replacing albums like 15 big ones, MIU, and Love You?
