Re: zydeco coteau - what's the secret?

I think it's a feature because it seems to be consistent. Only once in a while does it seem he's maybe, kinda, padding something or trying to catch up.

But, since you played it, is it a consistent timing, and, can it be quantified?

Re: zydeco coteau - what's the secret?

count the melody
see if it is always the same
there may be an A and a B part that only vary by number of extra beats

i know on 'you stole my monkey' it is totally irregular

he skips odd numbers of beats in random places

when my band plays that they just hammer on 1 1 1 1 1

no chord changes

no downbeat really or backbeat

i make that impossible!

Re: zydeco coteau - what's the secret?

Thanks for the warning on "Who Stole My Monkey". That's on my list to learn.

I figure learning John Delaphose's "Joe Pete" put me into a higher category of trying to figure **** out, but, I guess there's even higher categories.

1 1 1 1 1 1

yeah if you do that one right , it;s impossible for the band to follow

just tell them to hit 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 every beat!

even if they go 1 2 they will miss it about half the time

at least the way i play it
