Size is the main reason the L's are upright, it's a squeeze getting a M and H down. You probably could do that on some of the higher keys by thinning down the frames and maybe re-positioning the holes.

What you found may not be standard if you checked others. What I've mostly noticed is the upright M has less volume and punch than the flat one, but there's all kinds of variables.

Also, your layout is not standard, it's usually MMLH, starting from the holes closest to the keyboard
